Accounting firm joins international group

Tafoya Barrett and Associates PC announces it has been accepted as a member of CPA Associates International Inc., an international association of accounting firms.

Founded in 1979, Tafoya Barrett and Associates is one of the largest local, certified public-accountant firms in Durango with three partners and a total staff of eight. SCAPE announces recent graduate

The Southwest Colorado Accelerator Program for Entrepreneurs presents New Hat Baking as the most recent graduate of the program.

SCAPE supports the creation and development of job-creating companies by offering an accelerator program, which provides funding, education and mentoring.

Amber Davis began New Hat Baking to fill the need for gluten-free products after her son was diagnosed with Asperger’s. Davis’ mixes use sorghum – a genus of grasses, one of which is raised for grain and made into flour.

Chamber to host Lunch & Learn event

Durango Chamber of Commerce will host a Lunch & Learn event titled “Solar & Your Bottom Line” at noon Feb. 25 at the First National Bank of Durango, W. 259 Ninth St.

The cost is $10 for chamber members and $20 for nonmembers. Participants will learn how other local business have benefitted from going solar and how solar can help to decrease operations costs and grow a business. Reservations are required.

Health department announces hires

San Juan Basin Health Department announces Andrew “Andy” Grimm as its new deputy director.

Grimm comes to the health department from the Veterans Affairs Health Care System in Baltimore, where he last served as the clinical business manager for the Departments of Nursing, Social Work, Sterile Processing, and Telemedicine. He graduated from the University of Iowa College of Public Health with a Master of Health Administration and a Master of Public Health, with an emphasis in health-care policy.

The health department also introduces its new Sexual Health Clinic Assistant Ashley Micikas as well as Megan Harvey as the new Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) educator in the Durango WIC office.

Micikas moved from Guatemala where she worked as clinic administrator and programs coordinator of a primary health-care medical and dental clinic in a rural village.

Harvey is a recent graduate of the Fort Lewis College sociology program and brings experience working in WIC in Arizona.

Business After Hours will be Thursday

The Durango Chamber of Commerce Business After Hours event will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at El Moro Spirits and Tavern, 945 Main Ave.

The cost is $7 for chamber members and guests. There will be door-prizes.

Rotary club presents award

The Rotary Club of Durango recently presented its Community Service Award to Jerry Martinez, owner of CJ’s Diner.

Martinez has served the Durango community in a variety of ways for more than 30 years. He was honored recently by Fort Lewis College for his many activities in support of FLC basketball. Martinez is the chair of Men’s Ministry at The River Church where he leads the annual Gary MacDonald Golf Tournament, which raises money to help members of the community who are in need. He is a board member of the 100 Club, which raises funds for fire, police and their families when tragedy strikes.

Medicine practice announces addition

Tara Ryan-Safran of A Touch Above Massage & Wellness has joined Durango Natural Medicine with Nancy Utter, a naturopathic doctor, at 117 East Animas Road (County Road 250), Suite A.

Ryan-Safran was born and raised in Durango. She is a licensed massage therapist and has been nationally certified for 21 years. Ryan-Safran specializes in custom therapeutic body work, accident and injury rehabilitation, Lymphatic Drainage Massage, aromatherapy, vibrational therapy and is also a Healing Therapy Practitioner, T.L.C. Most insurance will be accepted.
