Marketing workshop to be offered Nov. 12

The Durango Chamber of Commerce, ConocoPhillips and La Plata Electric Association will bring national speaker, trainer and consultant Jay Handler to Durango for a “8 M’s of Marketing” workshop from 8 to 9:30 a.m. Nov. 12 in the ballroom of the DoubleTree Hotel, 501 Camino del Rio.

Using eight simple guidelines, in the correct order, will ensure a more effective and efficient use of time, energy and money. The cost is $25 for chamber members and $35 for nonmembers. Includes coffee and pastries. Reservations are required.

City website features business directory

The city of Durango website – http://durangogov.org – now features a business directory for all licensed businesses within city limits.

This module is enabled through the completed business applications received in the licensing office at City Hall. The new website feature includes the business name, address, phone and business description. Included elements are a search function by name, alphabetical name listing, search by category and location map for each business address. Future components of the module will involve incorporating a business’ Web address. Business license renewals will be mailed the last week of November, with an anticipated new online license-renewal process available as well.

Southwest Midwives adds new provider

Janna Stefanek, CNM, joined Southwest Midwives in mid-August 2014.

Stefanek graduated from the University of Arizona with a bachelor’s degree in nursing in 2004. While working as a labor and delivery registered nurse in both hospital and out-of-hospital birth settings, she completed her master’s in nursing at Frontier Nursing University in 2011. She also has a bachelor’s degree in sociology from the University of San Francisco and a master’s in public health from Columbia University. Between her studies, she was a Peace Corps volunteer in the Eastern Caribbean on the island of Dominica.

LPEA to offer rebates for energy audits

The La Plata Electric Association board of directors has approved a new policy and program to financially assist members who take the next steps in energy efficiency through a professional energy audit. Rebates are now available for both businesses and residents.

LPEA customers who secure a professional audit and make at least one energy-efficiency upgrade suggested in that audit may receive a one-time Energy Efficiency Audit Rebate – up to $150 for residential accounts and up to $300 for commercial accounts. All customers within LPEA’s service territory are eligible for the rebate, and they will be required to provide LPEA with a copy of the audit and paid invoice. Total amount of rebates, combined with other entities such as Atmos Energy or the city of Durango, cannot exceed the cost of the audit.

Land Surveyors to meet Tuesday

The Professional Land Surveyors of Colorado Southwest Chapter will feature Larry Connolly, La Plata County Surveyor and member of the State Board of Licensure for Architects, Professional Engineers and Professional Land Surveyors.

Connolly will speak about state statutes, board rules and board rulings for surveyors at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the Animas Room of the La Plata County Fairgrounds Extension Building, 2500 Main Ave.

Cindy Schmidt opens new practice

Cindy Schmidt, MPT, CYT, Reiki Master, has opened her new practice, Pathways Physical Therapy & Holistic Health, at 2243 Main Ave., Suite 3B.

Schmidt will host a grand opening celebration from 5 to 8 p.m. today at her new location. Participants will learn about the holistic combination of services provided at Pathways, including physical therapy, Integrative Dry Needling, Frequency Specific Microcurrent, women’s pelvic health and wellness, yoga therapy, Reiki and meditation. Know Your Dough receives LPEA grant

Know Your Dough, a local nonprofit providing financial literacy for youth and young adults, announces it has been the recipient of a La Plata Electric Association Round Up grant for educational purposes.

Know Your Dough is grateful for the $1,500 check received recently, which will go toward funding financial literacy programs for youth in La Plata County.

Retirement to be discussed Nov. 19

Durango Chamber of Commerce will host a Lunch & Learn called “Are you ready to retire? How does a reverse mortgage fit it?” from noon to 1 p.m. Nov. 19 at the First National Bank of Durango, 259 W. Ninth St.

The presentation will be given by George Johnson, reverse mortgage loan office with Cobalt Mortgage, and Dave Smiley, certified financial planner with Oxford Asset Management. The cost is $10 for chamber members, $20 for nonmembers and includes a lunch catered by Digs Restaurant. Reservations are required.

Travel service changes name

Frank Fristensky has announced that the name of his tour business, EuroAm Travel Club, has changed its name to Tour Central Europe.

The new name more accurately reflects the aim of the company’s tour destinations throughout Central Europe. During the past 10 years, Tour Central Europe evolved as one of premier tour operators for small groups introducing its guest to historical, cultural, natural, musical and culinary experiences of the countries and regions they visit. Travelers come not only from the Durango area, but from all over the United States. Fristensky originally comes from the Czech Republic and speaks most of the languages of the visiting countries and knows the regions well.

The name change also includes a redesigned website inviting interested travelers to check out tour offerings in the Czech Republic, Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Slovenia, Croatia and the Dolomite/Alps region of Northern Italy and Southern Austria.

Bernie Baysinger has joined the General Hair Store, 323 South Camino del Rio located in the Centennial Center.
