LPEA ballots to be mailed May 1

Ballots for the election of three directors on the La Plata Electric Association Board are set to be mailed May 1.

LPEA directors represent their geographic districts and help determine current and future policy at the electric cooperative. Election results will be announced during the LPEA annual meeting May 22. In accordance with LPEA’s bylaws, annually, one seat in each of LPEA’s four districts comes up for election.

Ballots must be returned by 4 p.m. May 21 to FredrickZink & Associates. Members can vote in person at the annual meeting May 22 at the Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College. Registration for the meeting will begin at 5 p.m. and the business meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. Anyone voting at the meeting must do so before 6:30 p.m.

Pagosa brewpub wins medal at competition

Riff Raff Brewing Co., a brewpub in Pagosa Springs, won a bronze medal April 11 for its Weapon of Self Destruction Russian Imperial Stout at the World Beer Cup competition in Denver.

The 10-month old craft brewery earned its third-place finish among 42 beers entered in the British-Style Imperial Stout category by breweries around the world. The biannual competition occurs in conjunction with the annual Craft Brewers Conference. Riff Raff opened in May 2013 and brews a variety of American, English and German beer styles.

Marketing seminar to be held April 23

The Durango Chamber of Commerce will offer “Omni-Channel Marketing ... Tying it all together” presented by Paul Eckenrode of 360 Durango at noon April 23 at the First National Bank of Durango, 259 W. Ninth St.

The cost is $10 for chamber members and $20 for nonmembers. Participants will learn how to leverage existing resources and relationships to get more bang out of marketing and advertising bucks, generating more sales as a result. Reservations are required.

Introduction offered to Quickbooks

Bethany McManus will teach “Introduction to Quickbooks” from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. April 24 at First National Bank’s Training Room, 259 west Ninth St.

It is sponsored by the Southwest Colorado Small Business Development Center and First National Bank of Durango. A break for lunch at will take place at noon. Coffee and refreshments will be provided. The cost is $70 or $65 for Durango Chamber of Commerce members.

Katie Marechal moves to new location

Katie Marechal announces her new location at 128 W. 14th St., Suite B-7.

Marechal is a board-certified massage therapist and orthopedic and lymphatic specialist. She has been in massage practice for 14 years, eight years in Durango. The massage-therapy business is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Marechal focus on injury recovery and prevention, neuromuscular therapy and chronic pain/overuse syndromes. She has been trained in manual lymphatic drainage and specializes in cancer/oncology massage. Her new location is in the Riverfront Building, and her treatment room is on the Animas River Trail with its own river-front access and views. Parking is available.

Senators nominated for Partnership Awards

The Region 9 Economic Development District of Southwest Colorado (Region 9) successfully nominated Sen. Michael F. Bennet and Sen. Mark E. Udall for 2014 Congressional Partnership Awards for outstanding leadership in promoting federal community, economic and infrastructure-development programs.

Both senators were honored by the National Association of Development Organizations last month in Washington, D.C. The awards program recognizes members of Congress who have displayed support of regional development polices. Winners were selected based on their support of National Association of Development Organization’s national legislative priorities, such as funding for the Economic Development Administration, and other federal community and economic-development programs as well as supporting the work of regional development organizations at the local level.

La Plata coroner receives recognition

Janis L. Smith, coroner for La Plata County, has been recognized by Worldwide Branding for showing dedication, leadership and excellence in forensic science.

Smith oversees the daily operations of coroner’s office, assists in autopsies and conducts follow-ups regarding cases. She also lectures on the topic of forensic science and provides consulting services. Before working in this capacity, Smith was an Emergency Medical Technician for 18 years. She then attended a law-enforcement academy and worked for the Southern Ute Police Department while working as the coroner of the Southern Ute Indian Tribe for six years. Smith has a combined total of 26 years of experience in law enforcement and forensics. She is certified investigator, designated by the Colorado Coroners Association, and a registered medicolegal-death investigator, designated by the American Board of Medicolegal Death Investigators.

LPEA donates to nonprofits

In an effort to use idle money left abandoned by former member-customers of La Plata Electric Association as unclaimed Capital Credits, the cooperative’s board of directors has awarded Educational/Special Project Grants totaling $33,656 to these nonprofit entities in its service territory:

Manna Soup Kitchen, the Durango food bank, received $10,000 to support the capital campaign for new construction to house the planned Culinary Arts Training Program.

The Durango Adult Education Center will use the $8,656 grant for technology upgrades at its facility.

Compañeros: Four Corners Immigrant Resource Center received $5,000 in support of its various programs.

Pagosa Medical Center was granted $10,000 to assist in purchase of a four-wheel drive ambulance to serve Archuleta County.

AJs Greenhouse announces opening

AJs Greenhouse announces its opening at 60 E. Owen Road near Mercy Regional Medical Center.

The business is owned by Joel Anderson and Adia Hocker who have more than 15 years of experience in the greenhouse business. The nursery will be open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. every day.

The greenhouse will offer the best prices and selection on annuals, perennials, hanging baskets, vegetables and color bowls. The nursery also will offer kids classes. A free barbecue will take place at the nursery’s grand opening from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 3.
