Citizens Police Academy a great experience

Recently, the 16th class of Citizens Police Academy wrapped up its 11th and final week. I didn’t know what I was getting into when I signed up, but I figured it would be a great way to get to know the city police force and anything they were willing to share with me.

Being a person who thinks that the adage “ignorance is bliss” is not necessarily true, I decided to commit to the course. It has been an eventful, educational, surprising, uplifting and eye-opening experience. All the many speakers in their respective departments came to give us a feel for what the job entails. The enthusiasm and knowledge of their jobs was palpable.

I think I speak for the whole class when I say it was a worthwhile and noteworthy experience. Next year will bring another class and your chance to think outside the box and learn a lot about what being an officer entails. You will have a chance to do electives such as spending an evening at dispatch, ride along with an officer, make informed decisions in (simulated) dangerous and life-threatening situations, learn how to handle things that are an everyday part of the department’s experience and a lot more.

Thanks on behalf of the class of 2013 for all the hard work and organization that went into this class. A special thanks to Elizabeth, Dave and their fearless (fake-it-till-you-make it!) leader Jim.
