County appoints surveyor

During their special business meeting on Tuesday, the La Plata County Board of County Commissioners appointed Steven McCormack to serve as the La Plata County Surveyor.

McCormack has been a licensed surveyor for 31 years and has been in private practice in La Plata County since 1985.

He was elected as county surveyor in 1986, re-elected in 1990 and served a four year term until 1994.

In 1996, McCormack was appointed by the Board to complete the term of Surveyor vacated by a resignation.

He fills the vacancy left by the death of Larry Connolly in July.

McCormack is a charter member of the Professional Land Surveyors of Southwestern Colorado, and served a term as President.

"Mr. McCormack has the skills, experience and knowledge that is needed to effectively serve as La Plata County's Surveyor," said Gwen Lachelt, Chair of the La Plata County Board of County Commissioners. "The Board of County Commissioners appreciates the willingness of all of the well-qualified candidates who offered their professional services to carry on the work of county surveyor following the untimely passing of Larry Connolly."

The county surveyor is an elected position. A vacancy in the office is filled by appointment of the commissioners to serve until the next general election.

McCormack will serve until January 2017, when the person elected in the November 2016 general election will take office. McCormack took his oath of office on Wednesday.
