On a milestone day for Cullen Robinette, the Durango High School boys lacrosse team finished off a weekend road sweep of Front Range opponents.
One day after a win against Englewood, the Demons rolled to a 19-10 win against Prairie View (0-5). Robinette had eight goals and three assists to give him 50 points already through five games this season. The Demons’ last goal came with a man up with 7 minutes, 21 seconds to play in the fourth quarter. Robinette assisted Rocco Estes, and that gave Robinette 100 career assists to become the first player in DHS boys lacrosse history with 100 career assists and goals. He now has 222 career points, and that leaves him only 33 shy of older brother Kyle Robinette for most in DHS history.
DHS (4-1) head coach John Robinette said his son is leading all of Colorado in points, goals and assists this season.
DHS also had four goals and four assists from Corbin Randle. Estes also had four goals, and Dylan Berridge added three goals. Senior captain Andrew Coleman had four assists to go with four ground balls. Matt Miller, the team’s ground ball leader, scooped up six ground balls and won nine faceoffs.
“The kids played really well,” coach Robinette said. “This trip, it really seemed like we’re starting to click a little more, playing well together. We’ve got spring break now with the kids off for a week, and it was a great sendoff into break to have two victories. I hope we can come back and pick up where we left off, but the schedule doesn’t get easier from here will all the conference games.”
DHS goalie Dylan Gaver made nine saves and had an assist from the back. He made a save with Durango down a man because of a penalty. He then fed a long pass all the way up the field to Randle, who caught the pass in stride and streaked down the field for a shorthanded goal.
“It was a pretty amazing play,” coach Robinette said. “Our special teams play was amazing. With an extra man, we scored on five out of six attempts. Down a man defense was also amazing. We had a three-minute penalty for an illegal stick, and our defense held them to only one shot and no goals.”
The Demons will travel to face Fruita Monument at 4 p.m. April 5.
