After reading about Duke Schirard’s opinions vis-à-vis the city and its people (Herald, Sept. 10), I strongly urge everyone to give him the boot.

He has been in his overpaid sinecure for almost 20 years. What do we have to show for 20 years of Duke? The people of this community have a long memory.

I remember in summer 2002 when Duke and another local good ol’ boy, Butch, handed out special passes to their friends on County Road 250, which allowed them to interfere with federal firefighting efforts there.

Around that time, also, he fired a deputy who had the gall to run against him for sheriff.

Long memories, Duke.

Elected positions are not supposed to be lifetime appointments – especially not for bitter old men with strange, conservative ideas about society.
