Durango neighbors’ argument about dogs leads to police call

Law enforcement had assault rifles out, never pointed them at anyone

While no guns were pointed or fired, a neighborhood dispute could have ended much differently.

“A neighbor was upset with another after their dogs were in a fight,” said Lt. Ray Shupe of the Durango Police Department. “One went over to confront the other with a gun on his hip, and that neighbor called it in.”

Police responded with their AR-15 patrol rifles, he said, but the rifles were never pointed at anyone, nor did the neighbor take his gun out. Officers had their rifles out only because it was a report involving a firearm, he said.

“We talked to everyone involved, and no charges were filed,” Shupe said. “The man who had the gun was told it was probably not a good idea to get into a dispute wearing a gun.”

The incident took place in the neighborhood near Needham Elementary School, but no one involved, police nor civilians, was ever on school grounds.
