GED program available in Ignacio, Bayfield

Students between the ages of 17 and 21 who enroll in the GED program at Pine River Community Learning Center in Bayfield, 54 Mill St., or Ignacio, 535 Candelaria Drive, and attend classes through Nov. 1 will received $200. Students also will receive an additional $100 for each GED section passed by Dec. 31.

Enrollment and orientation is available at 9 a.m. Tuesdays in Ignacio or at 9 a.m. Wednesdays in Bayfield. Enrollment will take two and a half hours to complete.

Durango Education Center to offer several classes

The Durango Education Center will offer computer and landscape classes began Oct. 6.

These computer classes will be offered:

Computing Fundamentals, introductory computer class.

Excel I, learn the basics.

WordPress Website Design, build a free website in two days.

Word I, learn what is available with this program.

The landscape class is called “Four Steps to Take Now for a More Beautiful Landscape Next Year.” This is a classroom and field-trip course.

Mancos library to host adult computer classes

Adult computer classes will be offered from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. on the third Thursday of each month, beginning Thursday, at the Mancos Public Library in the community meeting room, 211 West First St., Mancos.

The first class is called “Computer Basics: Saving and Finding Files.”

Bayfield High School club to hold chalk run Oct. 4

The Bayfield High School F.O.R. Club will host a 5K colored-chalk run at 9 a.m. Oct. 4.

Registration will start at 8 a.m. at Bayfield High School, 800 County Road 501. Registration forms are available at http://wolverinedash.weebly.com.

The cost is $15 to register in advance and $20 on race day. F.O.R. strives to spread kindness and raise awareness about bullying in the community.

Columbine Christian announces events

Columbine Christian School, 1775 Florida Road, announces these events:

School pictures will be taken today. Teachers have the picture packets and envelopes if a child has not made it home with his or hers.

Goal Academy to host informational meeting

Goal Academy is a free public school opportunity for students throughout Colorado to earn an accredited Colorado Department of Education high school diploma.

Goal combines online learning with experiential learning, on-site classes, self-designed electives and concurrent enrollment opportunities for students who want to earn college credit while still in high school.

Academic coaches and support staff members are on-site to provide face-to-face assistance. Course assistance provided by content specialists is available online from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday to Thursday, and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Fridays.

An informational meeting will be held at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at Durango Public Library, 1900 East Third Ave.

Schools of Choice to hold public meeting

Durango Schools of Choice will host a community listening session from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Unitarian Universalist Church, 419 San Juan Drive.

Participants will learn more about the group’s proposed elementary charter school and share ideas. This meeting will focus on school culture.

The final listening session will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Durango Community Recreation Center, 2700 Main Ave. This session will be about the school’s approval process, academic programs, culture, enrollment process and board selection process. There will be time for questions.

Continuing-education classes are available at FLC

Fort Lewis College Continuing Education Program will offer these classes:

“Writing Creative Nonfiction” will be taught by Will Gray over eight Tuesday evenings from Sept. 23 to Nov. 11. This course will emphasize literary style, careful observation, personal experience and thorough knowledge of the subject. Several forms will be discussed, including narrative and descriptive nonfiction, history, memoir and personal essay. The cost is $199.

“Beginning Spanish” will be taught by Beth Malcolm on Tuesday evenings from Sept. 23 to Nov. 18. This course is designed for beginning students as well as students who would like to improve their Spanish. Students will learn the language by using an approach called Total Physical Response, singing songs and getting to know one another by speaking Spanish. The cost is $199.

VFW is offering students 2 scholarship opportunities

The local VFW Post No. 4031 and the Ladies Auxiliary will offer Voice of Democracy and Patriots Pen scholarships.

The Voice of Democracy is an audio-essay competition open to students in grades 9 to 12. This year’s theme is “Why Veterans are Important to our Nation’s History and Future.” The national first-place winner will receive a $30,000 scholarship paid directly to the recipient’s American university, college or vocational/technical school. Other national scholarships range from $1,000 to $16,000, and the first-place winner from each VFW department wins an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C. The deadline for submissions is Nov. 1. Students should record their reading to a CD. The recording can be no shorter than three minutes and no longer than five minutes.

The Patriot’s Pen essay contest is open to students in grades six to eight. The theme is “Why I Appreciate America’s Veterans.” The national first-place winner wins $5,000 and an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C., in March. Entries are limited to 300 to 400 words. Participants may be enrolled in a public, private or parochial school or home study program in the United States and its territories. The deadline is Nov. 1.

Durango district schools announce open houses

These Durango School District 9-R schools will host open houses:

From 5 to 7:30 p.m. today at Escalante Middle School.

From 5 to 7 p.m. today at Miller Middle School.

From 5 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Needham Elementary School.

From 5 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Riverview Elementary School. At 6:30 p.m. there will be a 10-minute informational session for fourth- and fifth-grade parents about their students’ TCAP reports, which will be distributed at the open house.

Durango High School to host college-planning meetings

Durango High School will host these college planning meetings for students and families:

The Junior College Planning Meeting will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. Monday in the DHS library. Juniors and their parents will learn about standardized testing, creating a test plan, how to pick the right college, best college resources, financial aid and more.

“The Admissions Game,” a presentation by Peter Van Buskirk, will take place Sept. 24. Time and location will be determined. Buskirk, a former college admissions official, will guide families through the admissions process from a student and admissions viewpoint.

“How to Pick a Good College” will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. Sept. 30 in the DHS library. Juniors, seniors and their families are invited to attend an in-depth informational meeting about selecting the best college.

“College Essay Writing” will take place from 6 to 7 p.m. Oct. 3 in the DHS library. Participants will learn tips and tricks designed to help write a college essay.

“How to Prepare for College and Beyond” will take place from 6 to 7 p.m. Oct. 20 in the DHS library. Freshmen and sophomores will learn what to do now to better prepare for the future. The group will discuss what colleges to look for, local resources and tips and tricks to succeed in school and beyond.

Animas High School announces events

Animas High School announces these events:

The Parent Advisory Committee will meet from 8:30 to 10 a.m. Sept. 30 at Carver Brewing Co., 1022 Main Ave. These meetings provide an opportunity to hear a monthly report from Head of School Jake Lauer, connect with other Animas parents, learn about volunteer opportunities and share questions and ideas. The Liberty School, 201 E. 12th St., is offering after-school enrichment classes for gifted students at 2:30 p.m. Mondays.

Representatives sought for exchange program

World Heritage, a nonprofit student exchange program, is seeking local representatives to provide program support to high school students from several countries around the world.

Representatives screen potential host families, plan annual orientations, meet with local high schools, provide support counseling for participants and visit with the exchange students and families on a monthly basis. Annual and additional training are provided, and representatives are reimbursed for their expenses. The ideal candidate should enjoy fostering new international friendships, be community minded and enjoy working with teenagers.
