Small business center to preview class series
The Southwest Colorado Small Business Development Center will offer a free preview of the upcoming Leading Edge Strategic Planning Series on Business Management and Planning from 6 to 8 p.m. March 31 in the Education Business Hall, Room 118, at Fort Lewis College.
The Leading Edge series will begin April 6 and will run into June. The series offers hands-on training for people already running a business to people who are just starting one. Topics will include organizational, operational and financial issues, as well as marketing.

All students and families interested in learning about AHS and potentially enrolling for the 2016-17 school year are encouraged to attend an information session and sign up for a shadow day. Information sessions will take place from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. April 14 and May 3 at the school. Shadow days take place every Thursday through May 5. 9-R needs volunteers for 8th-grade conference
Durango School District 9-R is seeking 30 to 40 volunteers for the third annual “Keys to High School Success … And Beyond!” conference for eighth-grade students about to transition to high school.
The students will explore topics around healthy relationships, positive self-image and advocacy. Volunteers are needed to help with the conference, which will be held from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. May 5.

Park Elementary School will hold its kindergarten and preschool registration from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 14.

Durango School District 9-R will host a teacher recruitment fair April 9 at Durango High School.

FLC department to host runs to raise money
The Fort Lewis College Exercise Science Department will hold a 5K and 10K “Books & Things” race April 10 at Three Springs.
The 5K will begin at 9:45 a.m. and the 10K at 10 a.m. The races will begin at 125 Mercado St. All ability levels are welcome.
Organized by FLC Exercise Science faculty, staff members and students, the race is a way to raise scholarship money for students. Donations will also accepted. The race will be held rain or shine.

Student exchange program seeks local host families
World Heritage Student Exchange Program, a public benefit organization, is seeking local host families for high school students from more than 30 countries.
Couples and families with and without children in the home are encouraged to host. People can host a student for a semester or for the school year. Each student is fully insured and brings his/her own personal spending money.

Registration open for music programs
Registration for Stillwater Music’s 2016 summer music program is now open for kids and adults of all ages.
Classes start June 6 and include a variety of one-week camps and ongoing classes for everyone regardless of their musical experience.
Camps for kids include introductory percussion, steel drum band, sound engineering, ukulele ensemble, theory and improvisation and blues camp with Kirk James.
Weekly band classes for elementary and middle/high school students will run throughout the summer. Community classes for adults and children 11 and older include community samba band, community percussion band, theory and improvisation workshop and songwriting with Robby Overfield.
Adult offerings include a dozen bands playing music in styles ranging from rock, pop, funk and jazz to Americana, blues and an a cappella vocal ensemble.

Application deadline extended for scholarships
The Durango Education Foundation is extending the deadline to apply for all foundation scholarships to 5 p.m. April 5.

Aspiring civil engineers can apply for scholarships
SGM, a civil engineering, surveying and consulting firm headquartered in Glenwood Springs with additional offices in Durango, Aspen, Gunnison, Grand Junction, Salida and Meeker, awards up to five scholarships in the amount of $1,000 each to assist aspiring civil engineers and surveyors in pursuit of their studies.
The Steve Westhoff Scholarship is in honor of Steve Westhoff, an SGM field engineer. The application deadline is April 1.

Durango School District authorizes online school
Durango School District 9-R authorized a new, public online school, Colorado Connections Academy@Durango.
The full-time online public school, authorized by 9-R and certified by the State Board of Education and the Colorado Department of Education, will serve students in all grades from across Colorado.
The new school will deliver technology-enhanced, tuition-free public school online to students statewide.
Colorado Connections Academy@Durango will begin serving students in grades kindergarten to 10th-grade in the 2016-17 school year, with an additional grade level added each subsequent school year.
