Know Your Dough teaches finances to fourth-graders

Know Your Dough, a nonprofit that provides financial-wellness programs for local youths and young adults, is hosting a program at Animas Valley Elementary School for fourth-graders through Friday.

The program is linked to Colorado’s academic standards for personal finances, which are included in state-mandated assessments.

Driver’s education class is scheduled for March

Four Corners Safety Association will offer a 30-hour driver’s education class from March 28 to March 31.

The cost for the class plus the six hours of driving required by the state is $385. Classes are limited to 20 students.

Columbine Christian School plans all-school ski day

Columbine Christian School will host an all-school ski day Wednesday.

Students should meet at the school parking lot. The trip will depart for Wolf Creek at 7:20 a.m. The cost is $43 for adults and $24 for students.

Durango Learns to offer several February classes

Durango Learns will offer the these classes:

“Introduction to Italian Language” with Paul Boyer will begin Monday. Classes will establish a foundation for using Italian, including reading, speaking and singing. They will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday and Wednesday for six weeks at Open Shutter Gallery,735 Main Ave.

“Business by Design, Not Default: Creating Greatness and Personal Freedom Through Properly Designed Businesses” with Eric Sirois of The Marketing Department will be held from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Tuesdays from Feb. 2 through Feb. 23 at DurangoSpace, 1221 Main Ave.

“Basic Digital Photography” with Paul Boyer will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Feb. 6 at Open Shutter Gallery, 735 Main Ave.

“Central Europe – At Turbulent and Magical Crossroads – From the Past to the Present” with Frank Fritensky will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Feb. 10, Feb. 17 and March 2 at DurangoSpace, 1221 Main Ave.

“Dyslexia Tool Kit: How to Help a Struggling Reader” with Yvonna Graham will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Feb. 16. The course will explain and demonstrate the first seven tools for tutors and parents.

“Your Personal Brand” with Jasper Welch will take place from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. for two Tuesdays beginning Feb. 16.

Latino College Day set for Feb. 12 at FLC

Fort Lewis College’s Latino College Day will be held from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Feb. 12 in El Centro de Muchos Colores in the college’s Student Union.

Prospective students and their families are invited to celebrate their Hispanic heritage.

There will be workshops to help them fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), engage in student panels, take a campus tour and more.

Ballet Folklorico de Durango will give a live performance, and there will be opportunities to connect with current students and FLC alumni who identify as Hispano and/or multicultural.

Lunch and dinner will be provided by FLC and El Centro from 5 to 7 p.m. Dinner requires an RSVP.

Fort Lewis College program earns national recognition

College Values Online has ranked Fort Lewis College’s Tourism and Hospitality Management Option as one of the best value bachelor’s degrees in parks, recreation and leisure in the country.

The option is one of the tracks available to business administration majors.

For its list, College Values Online looked at nearly 150 programs from colleges and universities across the country. The criteria included cost, attendance and the 20-year return on the investment students make when they earn a college degree.

College Values Online released its top 30 picks, and FLC ranked No. 25.

FLC was the only Colorado school to make the top 30, joining institutions such as Utah State University, San Diego State University, Ohio University and Bowling Green State University. The University of Toledo topped the list.

San Juan Dental Clinic to visit Florida Mesa

The San Juan Dental Clinic will be at Florida Mesa Elementary School, 216 Colorado Highway 172, on Thursday.

District 9-R is seeking volunteers for conference

Durango School District 9-R needs 30 to 40 volunteers for its third annual “Keys to High School Success … and Beyond!” conference for eighth-grade students who are about to transition to high school.

The conference will be held from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. May 5. The goal is to teach skills to support students in their efforts to build positive self-image, strong relationships with others and a sense of self-advocacy.

Eighth-graders are invited to learn about high school

All eighth-grade students and their families are invited to the Durango High School Expo for Incoming Freshman to learn about the programs at the school from 5 to 7 p.m. Feb. 8.

Breakout sessions will cover the eighth-to-ninth-grade transition, grade-level counseling, concurrent enrollment opportunities, AP courses, work experience, internships, clubs, activities, athletics, student support programs and special education.

Durango School District to cancel bus routes

Because of school bus driver shortages, Durango School District will cancel one bus route per day on a rolling schedule.

Canceled routes this week are: Bus route RJ1 on Wednesday, S51 on Thursday and S52 on Friday.

Animas High School announces events

Animas High School announces these events:

Students in Sara Price’s ninth-grade humanities classes will participate in their Model UN Exhibition from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday in Noble Hall, rooms 125 and 130, at Fort Lewis College. Students will grapple with the Israeli-Palestinian conflict using parliamentary procedure and their knowledge of global politics in the role of UN ambassadors from around the globe.

A team of AHS teachers will compete in the Snowdown Spellebration from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Henry Strater Theatre. AHS families are encouraged to come support the team. Spellebration is a fundraiser for the Durango Education Center.

The School Excellence Committee will meet from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Monday at the school. The Parent Advisory Committee will meet from 8:30 to 10 a.m. Tuesday, location to be determined. The AHS Board of Directors will meet from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Feb. 3 at the school. All meetings are open to the public.

All students and families interested in learning about AHS and potentially enrolling for the 2016-17 school year are encouraged to attend an AHS information session and to sign up for a shadow day. The next AHS information session is from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Powerhouse Science Center, 1333 Camino Del Rio. Sessions are also scheduled for 5:30-6:30 p.m. Feb. 23 at Durango Public Library, 1900 East Third Ave.; 10-11 a.m. Feb. 27 at the library; 5:30-6:30 p.m. March 9 at AHS.
