AHS juniors will present their LINK Exhibitions from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. today at the Animas City Theatre (STEM internships) and Thursday (arts internships). The public is invited to attend these celebrations of student learning, where students present projects they designed and completed during their three-week-long, full-time professional internships in a variety of businesses and organizations. Current ninth- to 11th-graders will register for 2016-17 classes May 4 during advisory period. Mountain Middle School will offer an enrichment program for home-schooled students beginning with a pilot program for grades six to eight in August 2016.

The “Mountain Options” program will be designed to support parents who choose to educate their children at home while having access to the school’s enrichment opportunities.

Enrollment in Mountain Options will be held from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday. Enrollment will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis. Enrollment will be offered online.

Interested families without access to the Internet may enroll on computers that will be provided at the front desk of Mountain Middle School on Monday.

At Mountain Middle School, Dave Farkas’ science class along with Jen Lokey and Nicholas Philliou’s humanities class will present a seventh-grade exhibition from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the school. Students have analyzed Jared Diamond’s book Guns, Germs, and Steel to incorporate the theories into their scientific study of the human body, human history and the effect of killer diseases.

The “Contagion Project” combined the study of humanities and science with students’ engineering and building a mechanical representation that illustrates their new understanding of science and history.

All community members are invited.

Fort Lewis Mesa Elementary School’s Parent Teacher Organization will meet at 3 p.m. May 17 followed by the Student Accountability Committee at 4:30 p.m.

Both meetings will be held in the conference room at the school.

More than 750 fifth-grade students from 15 schools across Southwest Colorado will participate in the Children’s Water Festival at Fort Lewis College from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. May 4.

Sponsored by the Southwestern Water Conservation District, the festival aims to educate fifth-grade students about water issues, the importance of this natural resource and how they can help to protect it.

Nearly 12,000 students have experienced the annual Children’s Water Festival since its inception 21 years ago. Classes rotate among several interactive, 20-minute presentations throughout the day. This year, there will be 30 different presentations by local water professionals.

The sessions are outside and inside, predominately in the Student Union, Noble Hall and library areas.

Durango High School Troupe 1096 is raising money for the International Thespian Competition this summer.

Troupe members are leading workshops at DHS for students in fifth to eighth grade. Workshops include acting, musical theater, improv and technical theater.

Workshops will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday. The cost for the workshop is $25 and includes a pizza lunch.

As a part of the city of Durango’s Safe Routes to School program, the Department of Transportation and Sustainability will host a Walk ’n’ Roll-a-Thon at Needham Elementary School the week of May 2-6. The week will culminate in a bike rodeo and parade May 6.

Throughout the week, students will be encouraged to walk, bike or carpool to school. There will be prizes for students who participate, donated locally by Brown’s Sport Shoe, Osprey Packs, the city of Durango and more.

The bike rodeo will include bicycle skills tests, rock dodging and other drill stations. The Gray Matters Helmet Program from Mercy Regional Medical Center will give a presentation, helmet-fittings and bike safety demonstrations. There will be bicycle registration and inspection stations, including a minor bike tuning.

The school-wide parade will be held from 1:30 to 3 p.m. May 6 along Columbine Drive.

Stillwater music will host “Colotour,” a touring band from Chinle High School in Arizona, for a band clinic and performance May 6.

Colotour is a 10-member band of Navajo students playing jazz and rock under the direction of Eric Swanson.

Stillwater music faculty will conduct a band clinic from noon to 3 p.m. at Stillwater Music, 121 W. 32nd St., Unit E, in Durango. Then Stillwater’s advanced combo “Super Bad,” under the direction of Jared Wright, will join forces with Colotour for a public performance and potluck at 6 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, 2917 Aspen Drive.

Stillwater Music’s summer program will include a songwriting workshop with local songwriter and bandleader Robby Overfield.

The workshop is open to songwriters, singers, writers and poets who want to take their songwriting to the next level.

Participants will bring their songs and/or song ideas to class and have an opportunity to work as a group to flesh out ideas and shape and finish songs. Participants will also learn and apply a variety of techniques that approach songwriting through language, melody, harmony, structure and more.

The workshop is open to high school-age students as well as adults. All musical genres and styles are welcome.

The workshop will offered from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Mondays in two sessions, June 6-17 and July 11-Aug. 8. Participants may attend one or both sessions.
