Two Fort Lewis College panels will meet Thursday

The Business Affairs Committee of the Board of Trustees for Fort Lewis College will meet at 2 p.m. Thursday followed by the Academic & Student Affairs Committee at 3 p.m.

These meetings will be held in the President’s Conference Room, 2503 Berndt Hall.

District 9-R schools to close for holiday

All Durango School District 9-R schools will be closed Monday in observance of Presidents Day.

Title VII program to host potluck at fairgrounds

The Title VII program will host a potluck feast for Native American students and their families from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Feb. 17 at the La Plata County Fairgrounds Extension Building, 2500 Main Ave.

Accountability group to meet at Florida Mesa

The Florida Mesa Elementary School Accountability Committee will meet from 8 to 9 a.m. Thursday.

Miller Middle School sponsors fundraiser

Miller Middle School is conducting a penny drive to benefit Pennies for Patients, a society that helps children with leukemia and lymphoma.

The drive has begun and will continue through Feb. 19.

Miller students can bring in pennies to benefit their grade level. Other coins or bills can be put into other grade levels’ jars, taking away from their total.

Durango High School to offer health fair

Durango High School will host its Heath Fair from 8:15 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Thursday in the Commons area.

Representatives from local health and wellness groups will provide information about their services.

Attendees will include San Juan Basin Health Department, Gray Matters, Axis Health System, Turtle Lake Refuge, Southwest Regional Emergency and Trauma Advisory Council, Planned Parenthood and the Colorado State Patrol.

DHS orchestra, band to play night of music

Durango High School Orchestra and Concert Band will host a free evening of music for their “Night at the Movies” concert at 7 p.m. Feb. 18 at the DHS Auditorium.

Know Your Dough to hold program at Miller Middle

Know Your Dough will host a program for seventh-graders the week of Feb. 22 at Miller Middle School.

The program is linked to the Colorado academic standards for personal finances, which are included in state-mandated assessments.

Graduate school offers master’s in social work

The University of Denver Graduate School of Social Work-Four Corners Program is accepting applications for the two-year Master of Social Work degree taught in Durango beginning in September 2016.

Students can obtain a two-year and advanced-standing degree.

The enrollment deadline is May 1. An information session is scheduled from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday in Suite 311 of the Commons Building, 701 Camino del Rio.

Child care directors can receive coaching

The Early Childhood Council of La Plata County, in collaboration with the Southwest Colorado Early Childhood Collaborative, is accepting applications from child care center directors for fall coaching.

These coaching opportunities are designed to offer support to directors in areas they want to grow as well as build their strengths.

Applications can be found at www.ecclaplata.org under the “Child Care and Early Learning” tab, then click on “Professional Development.”

The application deadline is noon Feb. 29.

Methodist Thrift Shop to provide scholarship

The Methodist Thrift Shop Board is offering a scholarship.

Applicants are considered on church involvement, leadership, community service, extracurricular activities and personal attributes.

Applications are available at the Methodist Thrift Shop, 986 East Second Ave., or at local high school counselors’ offices. The application deadline is March 15.

Animas High School announces events

Animas High School announces these events:

Sophomores in Stephen Sellers’ humanities classes will host a book launch party for their Poet Laureate Project from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Open Shutter Gallery, 735 Main Ave. The students will perform original poetry, inspired by their study of a various nations involved in World War I.

College counselor Jess Adams will offer a support session for seniors and their families who would like help completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday in the AHS Commons.

There will be no school Monday in observance of Presidents Day or Tuesday, when AHS staff members will have a professional development day.

AHS is seeking community members who have experience in finance and project management as the school prepares for designing, funding and moving into a permanent facility. Community members are welcome to contact the board at any time by emailing board@animashighschool.com.

Students and families interested in learning about AHS and enrolling for the 2016-17 school year are encouraged to attend an AHS information session and to sign up for a shadow day. The schedule for information sessions is: 5:30-6:30 p.m. Feb. 23 at Durango Public Library, 1900 East Third Avenue; 10-11 a.m. Feb. 27 at the public library; and 5:30-6:30 p.m. March 9 at AHS. Prospective students and families are encouraged to attend public exhibitions because these provide opportunities to see examples of student work.

Enrollment for the 2016-17 school year is now open. All families with students who will be entering ninth, 10th or 11th grade next fall are invited to complete an intent-to-enroll form online at http://animashighschool.com/online-intent-to-enroll-form. If there are more students who complete an enrollment form than available spots for a particular grade, AHS will hold its lottery March 18. New Horizons preschool opens enrollment period

New Horizons Educational Environment, 1131 East Third Ave., is dedicated to preparing children to be successful in school and in life.

The preschool is open to children ages 3 to 5.

It is a small center with a maximum of 15 students with two teachers.

Enrollment for the 2016-17 year is open until March 1.

New Horizons admits students of any race, color, national origin and ethnic origin to all the rights, privileges, programs and activities generally accorded or made available to students at the school.
