Bayfield to register kindergarten students

Bayfield Elementary Primary School, 658 S. East St., will host kindergarten registration May 18 and 19.

A child must be 5 years old on or before Sept. 15 to qualify for entrance into kindergarten for the upcoming school year.

People should bring a child’s birth certificate, immunization records, proof of residency and the child to registration.

The school will explain the schedule and program, and people will have a chance to ask questions. Participants should plan to stay 1 to 1½ hours.

Continuing education addresses nonprofits

Fort Lewis College Continue Education Program will offer these programs:

“Nonprofit Management: Documenting Your Organization’s Effectiveness,” taught by Paulette Church, director of FLC Continuing Education’s Nonprofit Management Program, will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday on campus. The cost is $59. This class will cover logic models, industry-accepted measuring tools, testimonials, leveraging local donors for support from larger donors, website effectiveness, annual reports and how to attract business sponsors and donors will be covered.

“Nonprofit Management: Building and Strengthening Relationships with Donors” will be taught by Margie Deane Gray, executive director of the Mesa Verde Foundation, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. April 22 on campus. The cost is $59. This class will offer practical tools for building and cultivating relationships based on mutual understanding and respect. People will learn about what does and doesn’t work in high-level fundraising outreach. The class will examine diversification of funding, donation policies, moving from annual donor or membership funding into planned giving and how to navigate effectively in the world of donor relationships.

Managers can hone their skills at FLC

Part I of the Fort Lewis College Continuing Education’s Professional Development Certificate in Management program begins Thursday.

This first course is called “Managing with Respect and Reason” and is designed for managers who are looking for the best practices for motivating and empowering their employees.

The course can be taken on its own or as part of the Professional Development Certificate in Management Program, which is a 50-hour course. Parts II and III of the program are called “Leading Thriving Teams” and “Building Organizational Competency.”

Trainers from P4 Consulting will lead the program.

Columbine Christian to clear trail of trash

Columbine Christian School announces these events:

Columbine Christian students will pick up trash April 22 on the Animas River Trail. This will be the school’s 12th annual trash pickup.

An open house will take place from 6 to 7 p.m. April 28. Participants will meet teachers and tour the school.

Fundraiser to benefit injured student

The third-grade classes at Florida Mesa Elementary School will host a fundraiser to benefit student JJ English and his family from 5 to 7 p.m. April 24 at the school.

The event will feature food, a live baked-goods auction, a silent auction and more.

All proceeds will go to the English family to help cover medical expenses related to a car accident.

Online survey offers chance to comment

Durango School District 9-R is seeking community feedback about how well the district is doing.

A short survey is available at www.durangoschools.org. The survey will help the district as it deals with budget decisions, looks for supports for students and improves communication with the public.

Students get moving at Walk-n-Roll-a-Thon

The city of Durango’s multi-modal division will host a Walk-n-Roll-a-Thon through Friday at Needham Elementary School in conjunction with “Trees and Kids Are the Answer.”

Throughout the week, students will be encouraged to walk, bike or carpool to school.

The week’s festivities will culminate from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Friday in the Walk-n-Roll parade along Columbine Drive.

The Gray Matters Helmet Program at Mercy Regional Medical Center will provide bike safety demonstrations, and Carver Brewing Co. has donated root beer floats.

Prizes are available to students who participate. Donors include Brown’s Sport Shoe, Maria’s Bookshop, Osprey Packs, the city of Durango and Mountain Bike Specialists.

Animas High School announces programs

Animas High School announces these programs:

The prom will be held from 7 to 11 p.m. April 25 at the DoubleTree Hotel. The prom will be followed by the Osprey After Prom Party from 11:30 p.m. to 2 a.m. at the Durango Community Recreation Center.

Enrichment program to be held after school

Parents can register kids for kindergarten

Durango School District 9-R will host preschool and kindergarten registration at these elementary schools:

From 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday at Park.

From 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday at Needham.

From 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. April 22 at Florida Mesa.

When registering, people should bring proof of address, birth certificate and a copy of their child’s immunization record.

Children must be 5 years old before Sept. 1 to be eligible to attend kindergarten.

9-R school board to meet May 5

The Durango School District 9-R Board of Education will meet at 5:30 p.m. May 5 in the district office building, 201 E. 12th St.

This meeting was rescheduled from April 28.

High school poets to take stage April 22

In conjunction with Durango Arts Center’s Creativity Festivity, Durango High School will host a poetry jam at 7 p.m. April 22 at Durango Arts Center, 802 East Second Ave.

Student poets should arrive early to sign in at 6:30 p.m. All are welcome.

Title VII potluck feast to feature dancers

Title VII Native American Education invites Durango School District 9-R families to an end-of-the-year potluck feast Wednesday.

The celebration will feature guest dancers from the Utah State University Cultural Arts Program.

National ACT testing will take place June 13, and registration will take place May 8.

Florida Mesa students attend music event

Florida Mesa Elementary third- and fourth-grade students will visit the Taste of Music at Fort Lewis College on Thursday.

Fort Lewis Elementary program helps boys

BAM (Boys Advocacy and Mentoring) will begin this week at Fort Lewis Elementary School.

This is an after-school group for third- to fifth-grade boys.

The group will participate in team-building and games and incorporate running activities.

The first meeting will be held from 2:45 to 4 p.m. Thursday.

Durango School District 9-R needs 30 to 40 volunteers for its second annual “Keys to High School Success ... and Beyond!” conference for eighth-grade boys who are about to enter high school.

Boys will explore topics around advocacy, healthy relationships and positive self-image.

The conference will be held from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. May 7.
