Title VII to host potluck feast

Title VII Native American Education at Durango School District 9-R will host its Holiday Potluck Feast from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the La Plata County Fairgrounds Extension Building, 2500 Main Ave.

Title VII will provide turkey, ham and drinks. Participants are asked to bring side dishes such as mashed potatoes, salads, cooked vegetables, sweet yams and a cake for the Cake Walk.

There will be music and a Navajo/Dineh shoe game. The STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) program will host hands-on activities.

Know Your Dough to offer program

Know Your Dough is offering a financial literacy program for students home for the holidays.

“Beginning Your Path to Financial Independence & Prosperity” is for students between 17 and 24 years old. Parents are invited to attend. Topics will include: financial independence, paychecks, saving, debt and credit, investments and money wisdom.

The program will meet from 3:30 to 6 p.m. Monday and Dec. 27 at the Crossroads Building, 1099 Main Ave., Suite 308. Registration is $50 per person.

LPEA seeks students for youth tour

La Plata Electric Association, in partnership with The National Rural Electric Cooperative Association, is seeking high school juniors to be a part of the National Rural Electric Youth Tour to Washington, D.C., set for June 12-18.

The application deadline is Jan. 12. All high school juniors whose households receive electricity from LPEA are eligible to apply.

The tour features a look at the federal government and the nation’s Capitol, including museum and monument tours, as well as interaction with Colorado’s elected representatives. Social activities also will be offered.

LPEA seeks to sponsor one student from each municipality within its service territory – Durango, Bayfield, Pagosa Springs and Ignacio. Home-schooling students also are eligible.

Applications are available at www.lpea.coop, from high school counselors and at the LPEA offices in Durango and Pagosa Springs.

High school career fair to be held

San Juan BOCES will present the “PoWeR Expo: Strengthening Today’s Youth for Tomorrow’s Future,” a career fair for area high school students, on Jan. 8.

PoWeR stands for Post-Secondary Workforce Readiness, and the focus of this event is to help students explore careers, learn about themselves and be PoWeRful in their life after high school.

The La Plata/San Juan/Archuleta County Career Fair Collaborative is an event for high school students in Durango, Bayfield, Pagosa Springs, Ignacio and Silverton.

Students will have the opportunity to experience Fort Lewis College for this event and attend three panel sessions.

Professionals interested in presenting as a panelist during this career fair should complete the registration form at www.mapmypath.org.

LPEA seeks students for leadership camp

La Plata Electric Association invites high school juniors to participate in the Colorado Electric Education Institute Cooperative Youth Leadership Camp – an all-expense-paid educational/leadership camp July 12-17 at Glen Eden Resort outside of Steamboat Springs.

The deadline for application is Jan. 12.

LPEA will sponsor up to four high school juniors, one from each school district within its service territory (Durango, Bayfield, Ignacio and Pagosa Springs).

Area high school juniors who receive their electric power from LPEA are eligible to participate in the 2015 camp, including home-schooled students.

To be considered, students must complete an application and submit it to LPEA, along with a 500-word essay reflecting the student’s personal perspective on leadership. Applicants should have a strong academic record, be interested in enhancing their leadership potential and have an interest in meeting new people.

Applications are available at www.lpea.coop, from high school counselors or at the LPEA’s Durango and Pagosa Springs offices.

Animas High announces events

Animas High School announces these events:

All AHS students will complete their end-of-semester Presentations of Learning from Wednesday to Friday.

The AHS Faculty and Staff Appreciation Lunch will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Friday in the Commons. To help shop, decorate, prepare or serve food or donate, visit http://vols.pt/kYJZ3y.

AHS Winter Holiday Break will take place from Saturday to Jan. 4. Classes will resume Jan. 5.

Enrollment for ninth, 10th and 11th grade for the 2015-16 school year will be open Jan. 5 to March 12. Information sessions will take place from 6 to 7 p.m. Feb. 3 at Durango Community Recreation Center, 2700 Main Ave.; from 4 to 5 p.m. Feb. 21 at Durango Public Library, 1900 East Third Ave.; from 6 to 7 p.m. March 3 at AHS; and from 6 to 7 p.m. March 12 at AHS. Durango district 9-R seeking bus drivers

Durango School District 9-R is looking for candidates to join its transportation team.

The district will provide the training and assessment needed to become a school bus driver. The school district’s benefit package includes health insurance, personal and sick leave days.

9-R schools to be closed for break

All Durango School District 9-R schools will be closed for winter break from Monday to Jan. 2.

Schools will be back in session Jan. 5.

The 9-R administration building will be closed to the public from Dec. 24 to Dec. 26, Dec. 31 and Jan. 1.

Kids’ Camp office announces closure

The Kids’ Camp office will be closed from Monday to Jan. 2.

No registrations will be taken during this time. To ensure a child is registered for the week of Jan. 5 to Jan. 9, and to qualify for the early bird discount, registration must be received by Thursday.

Needham students selling greeting cards

The third-grade students at Needham Elementary School have started a new International Baccalaureate unit, “How We Organize Ourselves: Humans Have Created Systems to Meet Our Wants and Needs.”

This unit includes a study of philanthropy, economics and community needs. Students will learn how the economic system works by creating and selling greeting cards.

Students are selling cards after school this week. Profits from selling the cards will be donated to a nonprofit of the students’ choice.

Park to host holiday concert

Park Elementary School will host its holiday concert at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Park Café.

The event will feature orchestra instructor Rusty Charpentier and the third- to fifth- grade orchestra students.

Third-grade students will showcase their skills on new ukuleles donated by the Park Parent Teacher Organization.

Shari Duhaime and Denise Leslie have been volunteering to teach and play ukuleles with the third-grade students.

9-R program seeking donations

Pathways to Independence, a special-education program offered by the Durango School District 9-R for students 18 to 21 years old, is expanding its classroom into the outdoors.

The new program aims to expand the potential of students of all abilities through meaningful and educational outdoor experiences.

The program is seeking donations of outdoor equipment such as tents, head lamps, camping stoves, life jackets and camping gear in order for students to participate in adaptive outdoor educational experiences.

Financial donations toward the purchase of equipment also will be accepted.

Escalante band, choir to perform

The Escalante Middle School band and choir will visit Florida Mesa at 9 a.m. Friday for a holiday performance.

The 46-member band and two choirs containing 79 students are directed by Evelyn Black. Parents are welcome.

Riverview choir, orchestra to perform

Riverview Elementary School Choir and Orchestra students will perform their annual Winter Concert at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in the Riverview Gymnasium.
