Animas High School announces events

Animas High School will host these events:

Thru the Lens will be at AHS on Wednesday and Thursday for school photos. Order forms went home with students. Completed forms and payment must be presented to the photographer for people who would like to purchase photos.

Janae Hunderman, LINK internship coordinator, will present “Internships the Osprey Way” from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday in the AHS Commons. Former mentors and students who have participated in AHS’s LINK program will share perspectives on how to make the most of this three-week-long, intensive internship experience. Hunderman will present a program overview and speak about the benefits of LINK for AHS students and the community. For more information, visit http://ahsinternships.weebly.com.

AHS Student-Led Conferences will take place from 3:30 to 6 p.m. Oct. 21. The conferences are required for all ninth- through 11th-grade families, and students are expected to be in professional dress.

Mountain Middle School invites public to exhibition

Suzanne Jackson’s eighth-grade science class will present its River of Lost Souls Exhibition from 5:15 to 6:45 p.m. Oct. 20 at Mountain Middle School, 108 W. 31st St. in Durango.

During this project, students studied the area’s geology to learn why gold and silver are in such abundance in the San Juan Mountains. In addition, students have looked at fish and macroinvertebrate populations in the Animas River over time.

Student presentations will include what has been done so far to mitigate mining waste and their call to action for the future of the Animas River ecosystem. Community members are encouraged to attend.

Suzuki piano lessons build concentration

Grazda Center for Literacy and the Arts has limited openings for new piano students, ages 5 and older.

Applicants sought to expand child care

The Early Childhood Council of La Plata County in partnership with the Southwest Colorado Early Childhood Collaborative is accepting applications from licensed child care providers (centers and homes) to expand the capacity of infant and toddler care in the five county region.

Applications can be found at www.ecclaplata.org under the “Professionals” tab followed by “Child Care and Early Learning.” The application deadline is Nov. 2.

Early childhood educators can receive stipends

The Early Childhood Council of La Plata County in partnership with the Southwest Colorado Early Childhood Collaborative is accepting applications from people working in the early childhood field for post bachelor coursework stipends for the 2014-15 and 2015-16 academic years. Funds are allocated to cover student’s cost for tuition and books for ECE or related coursework.

Applications and criteria for selection can be found at www.ecclaplata.org under the “Professionals” tab followed under the “Professional Development” tab on the left side of the screen. The application deadline is noon Nov. 4.

Education center to offer GED session

The Durango Adult Education Center will hold the next GED intensive session from Monday to Dec. 10.

This session will focus on passing the science and social studies portion of the GED test. Classes will cover writing, reading, civics, government, biology and more. Classes offer hands-on activities, practice tests and test-taking tips.

VFW essay contest to award 2 scholarships

The local Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 4031 and the Ladies Auxiliary will offer Voice of Democracy and Patriots Pen scholarships.

The Voice of Democracy is an audio-essay competition open to students in grades nine to 12. This year’s theme is “My Vision for America.”

The national first-place winner will receive a $30,000 scholarship paid directly to the recipient’s American university, college or vocational/technical school.

Other national scholarships range from $1,000 to $16,000, and the first-place winner from each VFW department wins an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C.

The deadline for submissions is Nov. 1.

Students should record their reading to a CD. The recording can be no shorter than three minutes and no longer than five minutes.

The Patriot’s Pen essay contest is open to students in grades six to eight. The theme is “What Freedom Means to Me.”

The national first-place winner wins $5,000 and an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C., in March.

Entries are limited to 300 to 400 words. Participants may be enrolled in a public, private or parochial school or home study program in the United States and its territories. The deadline is Nov. 1.

Sunnyside to celebrate Halloween with carnival

The 32nd annual Sunnyside Elementary School Halloween Carnival and Silent Auction will take place from 5 to 8 p.m. Oct. 30.

Admission is one book or baked good per family. Game tickets will be sold at the door for 25 cents each. The event will feature a haunted house, Book Walk, Plinko, Bingo, bouncy house and more. Food and desserts will be on sale. A silent auction will include seven gift baskets. All proceeds will go directly to Sunnyside’s reading and computing programs.

Sunnyside Elementary collecting coats for needy

Sunnyside Elementary School Girls on the Run will host a coat drive in October.

People are asked to bring new or gently used coats to Sunnyside before Oct. 21 to help families in need.

Florida Mesa Elementary to host Harvest Carnival

Florida Mesa Elementary School will host a Harvest Carnival from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday.

Volunteers are needed to help set up, to run the carnival and for cleanup.

Fort Lewis Mesa to offer Halloween Carnival

Fort Lewis Mesa Elementary School will host a Halloween Carnival Oct. 24.

Dinner will begin at 5:30 p.m. and the carnival will start at 6 p.m.

Drivers education starts Nov. 23 at Durango High

Durango High School will offer a drivers education course beginning Nov. 23.

Park Elementary School will host a singing performance in honor of veterans from 8:45 to 9:15 a.m. Nov. 11.
