Education foundation offers academic grants

The Durango Education Foundation announces a 25 percent increase this year in its Core Academic Grants budget for programs, materials needs and technology serving Durango School District 9-R students.

Grants are available to all educators in the district as well as to community organizations whose efforts support students.

Applications are being accepted through March 11. All applicants must call the foundation first to inquire if proposals fit guidelines. District educators must submit completed paperwork through 9-R’s Grants, Gifts and Donations portal. Others should submit applications directly to the foundation.

Adult Education Center begins winter classes

The Durango Adult Education Center, 701 Camino del Rio, Suite 301, has resumed classes for the winter session.

GED intensive classes will focus on passing the science, math and language arts portions of the GED test. Classes will cover writing, reading comprehension strategies, biology and more.

The English as a Second Language program will host winter registration Jan. 25-29 for all levels of English classes.

Beginning conversation classes in Nepali and Spanish will start Feb. 1.

Enrollment period open at Mountain Middle School

Enrollment for next year’s sixth, seventh and eighth grades is open through Feb. 29. The lottery will take place March 2. For more information, visit www.mountainmiddleschool.org.

Enrollment for the 2016-17 school year is now open. All families with students who will be entering ninth, 10th or 11th grade next fall are invited to complete an Intent to Enroll form at http://animashighschool.com/online-intent-to-enroll-form. If there are more students who complete the Intent to Enroll than available spots for a particular grade, AHS will hold a lottery March 18.

Student Shadow Days will begin Thursday and will take place every Thursday through March 17. AHS information sessions for prospective students and families will be held on campus and at various other venues throughout the enrollment season beginning in late January. AHS students and staff will attend the Durango School Fair from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Fort Lewis College ballroom. Students in Jessica McCallum’s 11th-grade humanities classes will present “An Evening of Rhetorical Discourse” from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Animas City Theatre. AHS juniors will express their emerging political and ideological perspectives about issues important to them. They have crafted original rhetorical pieces in various genres of discourse such as oratory, debate, music and spoken word poetry.

AHS juniors and their families are encouraged to attend Junior Parent Night with college counselor Jess Adams from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in the AHS Commons.

There will be no school Monday in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. School will also be closed Jan. 25 for a Professional Development Day for staff.
