Animas High School announces these events:
The AHS Board of Directors will meet from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the school, 20091 U.S. Highway 160.
The board is seeking a new member with experience in finance and project management for the next phase of the school’s development: designing, funding and moving into a permanent 21st-century facility. For more information or to apply, community members can email board@animashighschool.com.
The community is invited to a screening of the film “Most Likely to Succeed” at 6:30 p.m. Monday at the Animas City Theatre, 128 East College Drive. Admission is free with donations welcome. Doors will open at 6 p.m. for a mini-reception featuring student work. The film will start at 6:30 p.m. and will be followed by a conversation among students, staff members, parents and community members.
All juniors will participate in their LINK internships from Monday through March 25. Students will be full-time interns in a wide variety of businesses and organizations locally, in other states and internationally. For more information, visit http://ahsinternships.weebly.com.
Seniors and their parents will meet from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Fort Lewis College in Noble Hall, Room 130, to discuss graduation week events and ordering announcements, photos and caps and gowns.
AHS families are invited to “Know the Facts: Teen Vaping and E-Cigarette Use,” a conversation with Sloan Skinner from San Juan Basin Health Department and school counselor Arava Geva, will be held from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. March 9 at AHS.
All students and families interested in learning about AHS and potentially enrolling for the 2016-17 school year are encouraged to attend an AHS information session and to sign up for a shadow day. An information session will be held from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. March 9 at the school. Shadow days take place every Thursday. To sign up, call 247-2474 or email mainoffice@animashighschool.com.
Enrollment for the 2016-17 school year is now open. All families with students who will be entering ninth, 10th or 11th grade next fall are invited to complete an enrollment form online at http://animashighschool.com/online-intent-to-enroll-form. If there are more students who complete enrollment forms than available spots for a particular grade, AHS will hold a lottery March 18. District 9-R announces kindergarten enrollment
In April, Durango School District 9-R elementary schools will register preschool and kindergarten students for the 2016-17 school year.
At each school, registration will take place from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. The dates are:
Riverview Elementary School: April 6.
Animas Valley Elementary School: April 7.
Sunnyside Elementary School: April 12.
Park Elementary School: April 14.
Needham Elementary School: April 18.
Florida Mesa Elementary School: April 20.
Fort Lewis Mesa Elementary School: April 21.
Parents/guardians must bring the child’s birth certificate and immunization information as well as a utility bill or other verification of home address.
If parents/guardians cannot attend their school’s registration day, they should call the school or call 247-5411.

District 9-R invites you to comment on budget
Durango School District 9-R is seeking community comments about its 2016-17 budget.
The next community budget sessions are scheduled for 6-8 p.m. March 15 at Escalante Middle School, 141 Baker Lane, and 6-8 p.m. March 17 at Miller Middle School, 2608 Junction St.
Sunnyside Elementary to host St. Patrick’s party
The annual St. Patrick’s Day Extravaganza will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. March 12 at Sunnyside Elementary School, 75 County Road 218.
Dinner will take place from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 students and free to kids 5 and younger.
Tickets to Leprechaun Land, which gives kids games to play, will be $5.

The Miller Angel Games will be held March 14.
The fundraising efforts of students and corporate sponsors will be celebrated.
State and local funding does not cover the entire cost of providing students a rich and diverse educational experience at Miller.
The school requests that all students ask friends, family and neighbors for donations.

Regional Science Fair at fairgrounds Thursday
San Juan BOCES and Mercy Regional Medical Center will hold the San Juan Basin Regional Science Fair on Thursday at the La Plata County Fairgrounds, 2500 Main Ave.
Everyone is welcome and encouraged to speak with students and explore their projects.
Visitors can check out Mercy’s daVinci surgical robot and meet the surgeons who operate with it.

Mountain sixth-graders to show kinetic artwork
Sixth-graders in Josh Dalley’s science class at Mountain Middle School will exhibit “Burning Water,” a kinetic artwork project focused on the structure of atoms, chemical bonds and the unique water molecule, from 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Main Mall, 835 Main Ave., and Sweet 11 Gallery, 863½ Main Ave.
Students will display and demonstrate their projects. The goal for students was to design and create a kinetic art piece that is powered by a hydrogen fuel cell.
Students will explain the science behind hydrogen fuel cells and their understanding of the atomic model and chemical bonds through a podcast connected to their artwork.
Florida Mesa Elementary committee to meet
Florida Mesa Elementary School’s Student Accountability Committee will meet from 8 to 9 a.m. March 10 in the school’s conference room.
Conservation district offers $1,000 scholarship
The La Plata Conservation District offers a $1,000 scholarship to a qualifying student.
Any resident within the La Plata Conservation District area who has been accepted or is enrolling in college in Colorado or any neighboring state as a full-time student (at least 12 credit hours) with a declared major related to agriculture and/or natural resources may apply.
The scholarship will be awarded in two equal payments. The first payment will be made to the recipient at the commencement of the applicable school year. The second payment will be awarded to the recipient after proof of a grade point average of 2.5 or better through the first semester or quarter and after attendance at a La Plata Conservation District meeting.
An application form can be obtained at the conservation district office at 31 Suttle St.; at the La Plata County Extension Office at the La Plata County Fairgrounds, 2500 Main Ave.; or online at www.laplatacd.org.
The scholarship will be awarded based on ability, merit, character, sincerity and career purpose. No restrictions will be placed on an application because of race, creed, color, age, sex, national origin, religion, status or disability.
The application deadline is April 1. Successful applicants will be notified by mail no later than April 30.

Lecture series to feature talk about infections
Dr. Robert Cox, a board-certified infectious disease specialist, will give a presentation called “New Bugs, New Problems: Emerging Infections” from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at Fort Lewis College in Noble Hall, Room 130.
His presentation is part of the FLC Life-Long Learning Lecture Series in partnership with the Community Health Action Coalition.
Cox will talk about how to anticipate and prepare for future threats such as Chikungunya fever, Middle East respiratory syndrome, Ebola, pandemic influenza and drug-resistant superbugs.
The event is free.
