Durango Mall fundraiser benefits education group

For the fifth year, the Durango Education Foundation is the beneficiary of the Durango Mall Back to School promotion, which runs through Aug. 30.

For every $40 spent, shoppers receive a token to deposit in the mall’s education bucket. Tokens translate to a Durango Mall contribution to help the foundation fund programs for Durango School District 9-R. This year, the proceeds will help pay for transportation for student field trips.

Durango School District to elect 2 board members

The Durango School District 9-R Board of Education will hold elections to fill two seats.

The vacancies are available in districts B and D. Petitions to run for a seat on the school board are available at the Administration Building, 201 E. 12th St. They must be returned with at least 50 signatures by Aug. 28. Elections will be held Nov. 3.

Classes will begin Aug. 25 at Durango School District

The first day of school for first- to 12th-grade students in Durango School District 9-R will be Aug. 25.

All kindergarten students will have a staggered start. Parents and guardians will need to check with the student’s school for the staggered start date.

The first early-release day will be Aug. 31. All schools will be closed Sept. 7.

Riverview announces kindergarten start date

Riverview Elementary School kindergartners will start the school year on a two-day staggered schedule, either Aug. 25 or 26, based on the assignment from the school office.

All kindergartners will attend school Aug. 27. School will start at 7:50 a.m. each day.

Animas Valley Elementary announces August events

Animas Valley Elementary School announces these dates:

Fall check-in will take place Wednesday and Thursday. The school will review spring paperwork, if necessary. Participants will receive student handbooks, school supply lists and the lunch calendar. They also can sign up for Kids’ Camp and fill out free and reduced lunch forms.

Animas Valley will be closed for training Friday.

An opportunity to meet teachers and drop off school supplies will take place from 8 to 9 a.m. Aug. 21.

The first day of school for first- to fifth-graders will be Aug. 25.

There is a staggered start for kindergartners. The first day of school for children with a last name beginning with A-H will take place Aug. 25, for students with last names beginning with I-R on Aug. 26 and for students with last names beginning with S-Z on Aug. 27.

All kindergarten students will attend Aug. 28.

Florida Mesa Elementary announces August events

Florida Mesa Elementary School announces these dates:

An opportunity to meet teachers and drop off school supplies will take place from 8 to 9 a.m. Aug. 21.

The first day of school for first- to fifth-graders will be Aug. 25.

Kindergarteners will have a staggered start. People can pick their start date at fall check-in. If a start date was picked during spring enrollment, the school will call to confirm that date.

Fort Lewis Mesa announces back-to-school events

Needham Elementary announces August events

Needham Elementary School announces these dates:

Fall check-in will take place from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. through Friday. The school will review spring paperwork and update it if necessary. Participants will receive student handbooks and the lunch calendar. They also can fill out free and reduced meal forms, and sign up for Kids’ Camp.

A meeting about kindergarten will take place at 6 p.m. Aug. 19. Parents will learn about schedules, pick-up and drop-off policies, lunch and recess, and they will be able to tour the school.

Escalante Middle School will offer fall check-in on these dates:

Check-in for sixth-grade students will take place from 3 to 7 p.m. Aug. 19. Students who were not enrolled in Durango School District 9-R schools for the 2014-15 school year should attend from 3 to 4 p.m.

Check-in for seventh- and eighth-grade students will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. Aug. 20. Students who were not enrolled in 9-R schools for the 2014-15 school year should attend from 3 to 4 p.m.

Escalante announces dates for sports practices

Escalante Middle School announces these sports dates:

Football practice will take place from 7 to 11:30 a.m. through Friday, and Aug. 17, 18, 24.

The first day of volleyball practice will be held from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Aug. 17. Practice will take place from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Aug. 17-20, and Aug. 24.

A physical is required to practice.

Miller Middle School announces key dates

Miller Middle School announces these important dates:

Fall check-in for sixth-graders and new students will take place from noon to 6 p.m. Aug. 19.

Fall check-in for seventh- and eighth-grade students will be held from noon to 6 p.m. Aug. 20.

The first day of school will be Aug. 25.

Miller announces dates for fall sports practices

Miller Middle School announces these sports dates:

Blue cards will be issued from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the office.

Durango High School taking participation fees

Durango High School is collecting participation fees and is issuing red/white cards for fall 2015 athletic/activity participants from 3 to 6 p.m. through Wednesday.

The deadline for receiving fall sports red cards is Wednesday. The fee for 9-R students is $100 for individuals; there is a $200 individual cap and $300 family cap. The fee for non-9-R students is $150 for individuals; there is a $300 individual cap and a $450 family cap. Participants should be prepared to pay the fee when they pick up their red/white card.

Financial hardship should not be a barrier to participation. If assistance is needed, call Dave Preszler at 259-1630, ext. 2304.

DHS sports, activities to begin on these dates

These Durango High School fall activities will begin in August:

Know Your Dough seeks volunteers to teach

Know Your Dough is a nonprofit organization created to improve the personal financial wellness of youths and young adults.

The organization needs volunteers to teach programs to fourth-, seventh- and 11th-grade students during the 2015-16 school year in Durango, Bayfield and Mancos.

Ideal candidates will have teaching experience and/or knowledge of the financial-services industries, such as accounting, banking and investing, and a passion for working with young people.

Programs typically last four to five hours and meet for one hour at a time. A free one-hour training and materials are provided.

Animas High School announces events

Animas High School announces events:

The Head of School Reception will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Powerhouse Science Center. The reception will welcome incoming Head of School Sean Woytek from High Tech High in San Diego. Woytek will introduce himself to the community, deliver his State of the School address, field questions and greet students, families and community members. This event is open to the public. Student orientation for the 2015-16 school year will begin Aug. 24 for ninth-graders, Aug. 25 for 10th-graders and Aug. 26 for 11th- and 12th-graders. The first day of academic classes for all students will be held Aug. 27. Parent orientation will take place from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Aug. 27.
