Homemaker guild offering scholarships
The Colorado Master Farm Homemaker Guild is offering a $500 scholarship this year to a Colorado woman with an agriculture background.
Known by the guild as the “Second Chance Scholarship,” it will be given to someone who has had her college education interrupted or postponed and is hoping to attend a college, trade school or a secondary education institution. Homemakers are encouraged to apply.
The application deadline is May 15. The award must be used in the year it is received.

Continuing education available at FLC
The Fort Lewis College Continuing Education Program will offer these programs:
“Nonprofit Management: Advocating Legally and Effectively as a Nonprofit Staff Member” – taught by Paulette Church, director of FLC Continuing Education’s Nonprofit Management Program – will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. April 1 at FLC. The cost is $59 for one class. People will learn about advocacy and how to lobby effectively.
“Professional Development for Managers,” an 18-hour training, will begin April 16 at FLC. The training will include an interactive segment from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. April 18, followed by three more Wednesday evening classes. This training will benefit managers by helping them deal with conflict, gain people’s respect and improve relationships with employees.

Families needed for exchange students
ASSE International Student Exchange Programs is looking for families to host boys and girls between the ages of 15 and 18 from a variety of countries.
The exchange students have pocket money for personal expenses and full health, accident and liability insurance.
ASSE students are selected based on academics and personality, and host families can choose their student from a variety of backgrounds, countries and personal interests.

Horse center to offer horse camp
Medicine Horse Center is offering a six-week horse camp for first- to fifth-graders.
The camp will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Mondays beginning March 30.

Mid-level Spanish class available
The Durango Education Center will offer a mid-level conversational Spanish class from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Wednesdays from April 1 to May 6.
People who have taken at least one semester of Spanish and can speak beyond a beginner level are invited.
Students will practice speaking, listening, reading and writing in class and also learn about culture and customs.

Ignacio club to host yard sale
The Ignacio Elementary Explorers Club will host a yard sale May 2 at the school.
People can rent space for $15 and keep profits from their sales.

Family dance to be held in Ignacio
The Ignacio schools Relay for Life Team will host its annual family dance from 7 to 9 p.m. April 10 at the Ignacio Elementary School cafetorium.
There will be a bake sale, and people will have the chance to design a luminaria for any of their loved ones who have battled cancer. The luminarias will be displayed at the Relay for Life event June 27. There also will be a door-prize drawing.

Gateway to College program available
Students who have dropped out of school or are on the verge of dropping out and are between the ages of 17 and 20 have a second chance to earn a high school diploma.
The Gateway to College program based at Southwest Colorado Community College gives students the chance to get back on track toward earning a diploma and college credits simultaneously. Applications for the fall 2015 semester are being accepted.

Durango School District 9-R Board of Education is seeking community comment about school quality.
The board will host an open forum at 5 p.m. April 7 in the board room at the district office building, 201 E. 12th St.
The top five indicators that will drive the conversation include quality learners, quality environment, quality content, quality processes and quality outcomes.
Escalante launches T-shirt fundraiser
The Escalante Middle School Parent Organization is holding a T-shirt fundraising campaign.
The goal is to raise money to repair the school’s ropes course while increasing ways to build school spirit.
The organization also is offering mini-grants for teachers to help pay for things not covered by the 9-R budget.

Event to showcase scholarships
“Girls’ Fun-ding Night Out,” an open house showcasing educational scholarships and loans for women, will be held from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. April 6 at the Durango Public Library, Program Room 1, 1900 East Third Ave.
Local chapters of the PEO Sisterhood will sponsor the event. Participants will be able to learn about a variety of opportunities. The Women’s Resource Center scholarship also will be presented.
