Animas High School announces these programs:
AHS chemistry students will present their public communication materials related to the Gold King Mine spill and water quality in the Animas River from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Friday at the Powerhouse Science Center, 1333 Camino del Rio. A lecture from two Mountain Studies Institute scientists will follow at 6:30 p.m. The students have partnered with San Juan Basin Health and Mountain Studies Institute to create communications material to help members of the community better understand the risks associated with using water from the Animas River immediately after the spill, general science related to water quality and the scientific context of the spill.
The Parent Advisory Committee will meet from 8:30 to 10 a.m. Tuesday at Carver Brewing Co., 1022 Main Ave. All are welcome.
Juniors in Jessica McCallum’s humanities classes will present “An Evening of Rhetorical Discourse” from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Animas City Theatre, 128 E. College Drive. AHS juniors will express their emerging political and ideological perspectives about issues important to them as young Americans. They have crafted original rhetorical pieces in various genres of discourse such as oratory, debate, music and spoken word poetry.
Seniors in Lori Fisher’s humanities classes will participate in a Model Senate from 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday in Noble Hall at Fort Lewis College. Students will debate bills they have written about the federal budget and climate change, assuming roles of senators. The public is welcome.

Tara Abrams attends national convention
Tara Abrams of Cortez attended the Society for the Advancement of Chicanos/Hispanics and Native Americans in Science National Convention in Washington, D.C., from Oct. 29 to Oct. 31.
Abrams, a student at Fort Lewis College, presented a poster about her research topic: isolation and characterization of a membrane-bound pink pigment from acidobacterium capsulatum. The project was conducted with fellow student Elena Mylroie and chemistry professor Leslie Sommerville.
Abrams’s major is chemistry.
Ignacio 8th-grader to appear in film
Bird Red, an eighth-grader at the Ignacio Middle School, had the opportunity to be a part of the upcoming Netflix release “The Ridiculous Six.”
Red was chosen to be an extra throughout the movie. He is in his fourth year with the Ignacio Wildcats traveling basketball team. The team will host a screening Dec. 11 at the Ignacio High School Performing Arts Center, 315 Ignacio St., where Red will share his experience of being on set.
A concession will be available, and donations will be accepted at the door. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m.
Know Your Dough to teach 4th-graders
Know Your Dough, a nonprofit that provides financial wellness programs for local youths and young adults, will host a program at Park Elementary School for fourth-graders from Dec. 14 to Dec. 18.
The program is linked to the Colorado Academic Standards for personal finances, which is included in state mandated assessments.

Host families sought for exchange program
World Heritage Student Exchange Program, a public benefit organization, is seeking local host families for high school students from more than 30 countries.
Couples, single parents and families with and without children in the home are all encouraged to host. People can choose to host a student for a semester or for the school year.
Each World Heritage student is fully insured, brings his/her own personal spending money and expects to contribute to his/her share of household responsibilities, as well as be included in normal family activities and lifestyles.
Representatives are also needed to recruit and screen both potential host families and potential U.S. students interested in studying abroad.
Representatives receive a stipend for each student placed and supervised.
