Durango High School graduation will be held at 6 p.m. May 29 at the Durango High School Stadium.

Animas High School announces programs

Animas High School will offer these programs:

All-School Math Exhibition will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at AHS. All math classes except statistics will exhibit simultaneously in exhibitions ranging from Socratic seminars to hands-on, inquiry-based problem-solving with audience participation.

Kyle Edmondson’s statistics students will present an exhibit at 5:30 p.m. Thursday in the AHS Commons, where they will host a community forum called “Beyond Standardization: Accountability in a Project-Based Model.” The students have been exploring the issues surrounding assessment and accountability, with attention to the role standardized tests play. The AHS Parent Advisory Committee will meet from 8:30 to 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Smiley Building Cafe.

Matt Dooley’s ninth-grade humanities classes will present Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” at 5 and 6 p.m. May 6 in the AHS amphitheater.

The All-School Exhibition will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. May 7 at AHS. The exhibit will include a poetry cafe, Spanish-language food carts, science projects and more.

There are a handful of spots for incoming ninth-, 10th- and 11th-grade students in the 2015-16 school year at AHS. Durango High students to display their artwork

As part of Durango Arts Center’s Creativity Festivity, artwork from Durango High School students will be on display in May at the Steaming Bean Coffee Co., 915 Main Ave.

An artist reception will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. May 7 during the First Thursdays Art Walk.

Riverhouse seeking teachers, donations

Riverhouse Children’s Center, 742 Florida Road, is seeking a lead teacher for its Bluejays Classroom (children ages 2.5 to 3.5) and its Sparrow Classroom (children ages 18 months to 2.5 years).

Bayfield preschool enrolling students

Bayfield Early Education Programs is enrolling children for the 2015-16 school year.

Three- and 4-year-olds are eligible for preschool. All children must be potty trained to attend the program.

For children who have educational risk factors and will attend kindergarten the next year, Colorado Preschool Program slots are available. BEEP has a sliding scale for tuition. Scholarships and bartering also are available for qualifying families.

Food, fun and games at the Ignacio carnival

The Ignacio School District High Expectations Committee’s fourth annual carnival will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. May 11 at the Ignacio Middle School.

Activities will include a cupcake walk, ring toss, bouncy house, fish pond, bean bag toss, bingo, putting green, Knowledge Bowl, face painting and more. Frito pie, corn dogs, nachos, pretzels, popcorn, pickles and drinks will be available for purchase.

All proceeds will go toward the Veterans Dinner in November to pay for the community to enjoy a free meal. Tickets will be 25 cents each or 5 for $1 for carnival activities and $1 a ticket for food items.

Attendance awards will be announced at 6:45 p.m. in the Commons Area.

Yard Sale Extravaganza coming to Ignacio High

The Yard Sale Extravaganza will take place from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Ignacio High School parking lot.

There will be more than 10 booths.

Ignacio FFA to serve Rocky Mountain oysters

Ignacio FFA Booster Club will host the Spring Rocky Mountain Oyster and Catfish Fry, Dance and Pie Auction on May 9 at Spring Creek Hall in Ignacio.

The cost for dinner and the dance is $15 for adults and $10 for children younger than 10. The dance only is $5. The meal will include Rocky Mountain oysters or catfish, coleslaw, beans, rolls and desserts. Mark Anderson will provide music at 7:30 p.m.

Your comments can help Fort Lewis College review

Fort Lewis College is up for re-accreditation with the Higher Learning Commission this fall. The public has the opportunity to send their comments to the Higher Learning Commission to aid the re-accreditation process.

Accreditation is a mark of excellence that speaks to an institution’s rigor and value. Representatives from the Higher Learning Commission will conduct a visit to campus in October. Before that, the general public can contribute their comments. This input will be used as part of the evaluation of the college.

Non-traditional student scholarship available

The Western Colorado Community Foundation is accepting applications for The Lew Goodhart Memorial Scholarship.

The scholarship is awarded to students who have completed a minimum of 15 college credit hours and are legal residents of Colorado. Preference will be given to non-traditional students, defined as adult students age 22 or older or a re-entry student.

Other requirements include a GPA between 2.0 and 3.5 and demonstrated financial need. Enrollment in a Colorado educational facility is required. Preference will be given to residents of the state’s Western Slope who are attending a Western Slope institution of higher education.

The application deadline is June 1. Two non-renewable scholarships of $1,000 will be awarded and are available through an online application process at www.wc-cf.org. For more information, call Cecile Aday at (970) 243-3767.

Continuing education focuses on nonprofits

Fort Lewis College Continuing Education Program will offer:

“Nonprofit Management: Practice Running Effective Meetings for Board & Staff” will be taught by Paulette Church, director of FLC Continuing Education’s Nonprofit Management Program, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. May 5 on campus for $59. People will learn about how they and their board chair can have efficient meetings.

Florida Mesa invites you to meet teachers, staff

The teachers and staff members of Florida Mesa Elementary School will visit with interested people from 7:20 to 7:40 a.m. every Wednesday.

Coffee and a breakfast treat will be provided.

DHS students have access to free dental services

Durango High School’s School Based Health Center will offer a free dental clinic May 8 at DHS.

The dental clinic will be available to students who are in need of a dental cleaning, fluoride and sealants. If necessary, restorative work will be available at a follow-up visit at Smile Makers.

Student can catch up at DHS summer school

Durango High School will offer Summer School from June 8 to July 3.

Students may take summer school courses only if they have previously failed the course and need to recover credit. All courses will be computer-based using an online educational system called APEX. English, math, science and social studies core academic classes will be available.

Fees must be paid before a student can enroll and all courses must be completed by July 3.

If courses are not completed, course fees will not be refunded and students will need to retake the failed course during the next school year.

Apply now for Durango’s Shared School Program

Durango School District 9-R’s Shared School Program is taking applications for the 2015-2016 school year.

The program is designed for home-schooling families and offers classes such as art, music, drama computer, physical education and Spanish.

Elementary classes will be held from 8:45 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. Middle school classes will meet from 8:15 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesdays. The district is exploring options and considering expanding the middle school program to two days a week for the upcoming school year. All classes meet at Miller Middle School.

DHS counselors invite parents to meet them

Durango High School will host “Coffee with the Counselors” from 8:15 to 9 a.m. May 6.

All of the counselors will be available to speak with parents, answer questions and discuss concerns.

Durango High seeking scholarship information

The counseling office at Durango High School is compiling scholarship awards for graduating seniors.

People are asked to submit this information to the counseling office or email to csmith3@durango.k12.co.us: Name, name of the scholarship or program, amount being awarded, a copy of the letter offering the scholarship and the name of the school student will attend in the fall.

This information must be received no later than May 8 to include it in the Senior Academic Awards Night.

District 9-R board will meet Tuesday

Durango School District 9-R Board of Education will meet at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in the district office building, 201 E. 12th St.

This meeting has been reschedule from April 28.

Volunteers sought for boys conference

Durango School District 9-R needs 30 to 40 volunteers for its second annual “Keys to High School Success ... and Beyond!” conference for eighth-grade boys who are about to enter high school.

The boys will explore topics around advocacy, healthy relationships and positive self-image and advocacy.

The conference will be held from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. May 7.

National ACT testing will take place June 13.

Fort Lewis Mesa kids can bring bikes

The Fort Lewis Mesa Bike Rodeo will take place May 8.

Children are welcome to bring their bicycles to school and leave them on the stage for use during their physical education class.

Before dropping off the bike, it should be labeled with the child’s name. The label should indicate if the child is willing to share the bike with other students throughout the day.

Volunteers needed to help with garden at Miller

Help is needed to complete the Miller Middle School student garden.

Volunteers are needed to help build a deer-proof fence. The next workday will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday north of the sport court.

Miller invites parents to sex education forum

A parent forum will be offered by Miller Middle School from 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Parents of students are invited to a presentation by Rachael Carlevale, the education program manager of Responsible Sex Education Institute.

This presentation is designed specifically for parents, guardians, family members and youth-serving professionals who want to sharpen their skills around talking with youths about sexuality and sexual health.

End of the year at DHS means it’s concert time

Durango High School’s End of the Year Concert will take place at 7 p.m. May 12 at the DHS auditorium.

Native American parents can comment on program

The Title VII Native American Education Program will hold a public hearing for all parents of Native American students in Durango School District 9-R to discuss how the district spends program funds from 5 to 5:45 p.m. Monday at the district administration building, 201 E. 12th St.

Title VII (Indian Education Act) is a federally funded program that supports the academic needs of federal and state recognized American Indian/Alaskan Native students. Participants will learn about the program’s services.
