Teachers can build leadership skills
The Fort Lewis College Teacher Education Department will host an information session for teachers in the Four Corners who are interested in taking graduate courses in teacher leadership at FLC from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Durango Public Library, 1900 East Third Ave.
Graduate faculty and staff members will provide an in-depth presentation about teacher leadership, and a question-and-answer session will take place after the presentation.
Attendees will learn how the program is designed for participants to balance work, family and school. Graduate students are eligible for federal financial aid, the Native American tuition waiver and scholarships.

Ignacio’s Empty Bowls to aid hungry families
Ignacio Elementary School will host Empty Bowls from 5 to 7 p.m. April 30 at the school.
Third-, fourth- and fifth-grade students and community members will create custom-made bowls that will be available to purchase. With a $10 purchase of a bowl, people are invited to sample homemade soups and take part in a silent auction. All money raised will benefit local and international families who are experiencing food insecurities.

Animas High School announces events
Animas High School announces these events:
The LINK Internship Exhibition will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday in the Fort Lewis College Student Union Ballroom. Juniors will present individual projects they completed while on their three-week-long, full-time internships in March at businesses and organizations locally and farther afield. Students will speak about their experiences pursuing their interests, career goals and passions.
Ninth-grade students will use the FLC campus as their classroom Friday to explore the Center of Southwest Studies, view the senior art exhibit, work with the Environmental Center and tour the campus to get a sense of college life.
There will be no classes Monday because staff members will have a professional development day.
The Parent Advisory Committee will meet from 8 to 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Smiley Building Cafe, 1309 East Third Ave.
Seniors will present their end-of-the-year art opening from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Thursday at Pine River Valley Bank, 1701 Main Ave.
There are a handful of available spots for incoming ninth-, 10th- and 11th-grade students in the 2015-16 school year at AHS.

Nonprofit managers to learn about hiring
Fort Lewis College Continuing Education will offer these programs:
“Nonprofit Management: Recruiting and Hiring the Right Staff and Volunteers” will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. April 8 on campus. Paulette Church, director of FLC Continuing Education’s Nonprofit Management Program, and Darren Mathews, director of FLC Human Resources, will teach the class. The cost is $59. This session will be include case studies and resources to help with the hiring process from the executive director to the part-time volunteer. The instructors will address when and how to let go of misfits, awareness of “trailing spouse” issues, barriers presented by high cost of living, over-qualification implications and absenteeism that causes stress.
“Professional Development for Managers,” an 18-hour training which includes the Emotional Competency Inventory, is designed to help people learn leadership styles that encourage, empower and engage people who are supervisors. Leaders will immediately put what they learn to use in their day-to-day operations and create a workforce that cares about quality, efficiency, innovation and each other. The training is $1,400.

Common Grounds Café will host an open house from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. April 10 at the cafe inside the Durango Public Library, 1900 East Third Ave.
This is a student-run café.
Boys conference needs volunteers
Durango School District 9-R needs 30 to 40 volunteers for its second annual “Keys to High School Success ... and Beyond!” conference for eighth-grade boys who are about to enter high school.
Boys will explore topics around advocacy, healthy relationships and positive self-image.
The conference will be held from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. May 7.

9-R board wants your thoughts about quality
Durango School District 9-R Board of Education is seeking community comments about school quality.
The board will host a forum at 5 p.m. April 7 at the district office building, 201 E. 12th St.
The five indicators that will drive the conversation include quality learners, quality environment, quality content, quality processes and quality outcomes.
All community members are invited to participate and provide comments for consideration.
ACT test is June 13; register by May 8
National ACT testing will take place June 13.
Registration is needed by May 8. The next national testing date in Colorado will be October 2015.

Escalante Middle School will host an open house for incoming sixth-graders from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
The open house will provide the opportunity for incoming sixth-grade students and families to learn about Escalante – Durango’s Expeditionary Learning Middle School and meet principals, counselors and teachers.

Miller Middle School will host an open house for incoming sixth-graders from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.
The open house will provide the opportunity for incoming sixth-grade students and families to learn about Miller’s International Baccalaureate Program and meet principals, counselors and teachers.
District 9-R to recruit teachers at April fair
Durango School District 9-R will host a teacher recruitment fair April 11 at Durango High School.
To be considered for an interview at the recruitment fair, applicants must be fully credentialed and highly qualified by August.

Durango School District 9-R is seeking community feedback about how well the district is doing.
