School district seeks calendar feedback

Durango School District 9-R is seeking feedback about options for the 2015-16 academic calendar.

While the district can’t accommodate every request, it will listen to comments and take them into consideration.

Miller Middle School to host fundraiser

Miller Middle School’s school-wide fundraiser, The Miller Angel Games, will be held Feb. 23 on the Miller football field.

Students will divide into teams representing different countries and compete in various games. Before the games, students will collect donations to help fund enrichments to the curriculum and instruction. These funds will help provide new programs, technology and service projects. The fundraising goal for 2014 is $15,000. There are corporate sponsorship opportunities available for this event that carry on throughout the calendar year.

School district to host community forum

Durango School District 9-R Superintendent Dan Snowberger will host a community forum to discuss standards, assessments and more from 6 to 8 p.m. Jan. 22 at Durango Public Library, 1900 East Third Ave.

Participants will learn the facts about assessment mandates required by law and how the district is working with teachers to implement the required bills and support teachers and students along the way. Participants also will learn how the School Vault works and how it supports classrooms.

Durango school fair to take place at FLC

A school fair be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Jan. 14 in the Fort Lewis College Ballroom.

All Durango School District 9-R schools as well as charter, private and parochial schools will attend. Participants also will hear about the new charter school and school-based health center options.

Mountain Middle School opens enrollment

Mountain Middle School announces enrollment registration for incoming sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders is open through Feb. 28.

The enrollment lottery will be held March 4.

Animas High School announces programs

Animas High School announces these programs:

Enrollment for incoming ninth-, 10th- and 11th-grade students for the 2015-16 school year is open through March 12. AHS information sessions will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. Feb. 3 at Durango Community Recreation Center, 2700 Main Ave.; from 4 to 5 p.m. Feb. 21 at Durango Public Library, 1900 East Third Ave.; and from 6 to 7 p.m. March 3 and March 12 at AHS. All AHS sophomores will attend the PoWeR Career Fair Thursday at Fort Lewis College.

The AHS Parent Advisory Committee will meet from 8:30 to 10 a.m. Tuesday at Carver Brewing Co., 1022 Main Ave. All are welcome.

There will be no school Jan. 19 in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day and Jan. 26, which is a professional development day for AHS staff members.

Students in Steve Smith’s chemistry class will present the exhibition “Shark Tank: An Evening of Investment” from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Powerhouse Science Center, 1333 Camino del Rio. The exhibition will depend on audience participation. The students turned entrepreneurs, researchers and authors will seek to convince the audience their projects warrant support. People attending the exhibition will be given “Osprey Bucks” to invest in the ideas and projects they believe are most likely to succeed. Students either conceptualized an improvement to a consumer product by changing its chemical composition, researched a material that may change society or explored how a material has affected society in the past.

Volunteers needed for boys conference

Durango School District 9-R needs 30 to 40 volunteers for its second annual “Keys to High School Success ... and Beyond!” conference for eighth-grade boys who are about to transition to high school.

The boys will explore topics around advocacy, healthy relationships and positive self-image. Through interactive workshops, the students will gain skills in these areas, which are delivered in an academic setting and align with state health standards.

The conference will be held from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. May 7.

Student aid application help available Wednesday

A hands-on help session for completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid application will be held from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Durango High School library.

This event is only for DHS senior students and their families. People attending will need:

A student and parent personal identification number, which can be obtained before the event by visiting https://fafsa.ed.gov. The student and the parent, who will be listed in the application, must each have a PIN number.

The most recent tax return for the income section of the application.

The student’s 2013 W-2’s, if there are any.

Financial-aid staff members from Fort Lewis College will be available to help complete this application online.

DHS marketing students to present

Durango High School marketing students will present their Marketing in Action student work from 8:15 to 10 a.m. Jan. 12 to Jan. 21.

Marketing in Action, a course available to all DHS students but housed within the school’s International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme Atlas program, asks students to consult with a local business to determine its specific challenges. Students conduct research around the defined business problem, draw conclusions from their findings and make strategy suggestions to the business in the form of a written paper and an in-person presentation.

The student presentations are open to students, parents, community members and business people, although registration is required.

LPEA to discuss student scholarships

To assist high school seniors and their parents with the application process for college scholarships available through La Plata Electric Association, the cooperative will host an open house from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Jan. 22 at LPEA’s Bodo Industrial Park headquarters, 45 Stewart St.

LPEA staff members will be available to answer questions. Copies of all applications will be available, and no RSVP is necessary.

All high school seniors, including home-school students, in LPEA’s service territory who receive their electricity from the co-op are eligible to apply for the variety of funding opportunities.

The application deadline is March 2. Attendance at the open house is not a requirement for applying.

LPEA directly offers the LPEA Scholarship (four-year) and LPEA/John Voelker Memorial Scholarship (two-year), and provides for additional affiliated rural electric scholarships and awards offered by Tri-State Generation and Transmission and Basin Electric Power Cooperative.
