Durango Film: An Independent Film Festival will kick off Wednesday and run through March 4. And while at first glance, the program for this year’s festival may seem daunting, fear not – here are five of our top picks:
Welcome to the Men’s Group. (Narrative feature) Take a peek inside the intimate dynamic of an all-male support group when they gather one morning for a ritual breakfast and their unique form of male bonding. One Sunday a month, these men refrain from beer and football to share their personal issues in the noble hope of becoming a bit more evolved than their fathers. On this day, things do not go as planned when one member appears headed for a breakdown, and long-standing conflicts and secrets threaten to destroy the trust between the men. 130 min.
Watu Wote: All of Us. (Narrative short. Shown during the “Based on a True Story Shorts Program.”) Kenya has been targeted by terrorist attacks, and mistrust between Muslims and Christians is growing. A 2018 Academy Award nominee. 22 min. Language: Swahili, Somali.
The Divine Order. (Narrative feature) Despite the worldwide social upheavals of the previous decade, in 1971, women in Switzerland were still denied the right to vote. When dutiful housewife Nora is forbidden by her husband to take a part-time job, her frustration leads her to become the poster child of her town’s suffragette movement. Her newfound celebrity brings humiliation, threats and the potential end to her marriage, but she refuses to back down. She convinces the women in her village to go on strike and makes a few startling discoveries about her own liberation. 97 min. Language: German, English, Italian.Driver X. (Narrative feature) Leonard, a 50-year-old stay-at-home dad in Los Angeles, takes care of his young daughters during the day while his wife works. Job opportunities are scarce for a “mature-aged” former record store owner. Desperate, with their savings dwindling, Leonard signs up to drive nights for DriverX, a popular ride-share company. Navigating LA is challenging, and Leonard doesn’t understand new tech or the young millennials he drives. With his marriage fraying, Leonard discovers the challenges facing middle-aged men today in an economy disrupted by new technologies. 98 min.
