Errors hurt the Durango High School baseball team against Fruita Monument on Friday at DHS.

The Demons committed three errors in the fourth inning, helping Fruita score five runs in the frame and extend its lead to 9-0. The Wildcats added two runs in the sixth and won 11-0.

“The guys are playing their hearts out,” said DHS head coach Rob Coddington. “We just need to keep working and getting better, and the guys are committed to that.”

Despite the errors, Durango did make some good plays in the field. Taggert Barden chased down some hard hit fly balls in right field. Ian Szura snagged a line drive at third. And Gavin Hamlin made some routine plays at shortstop to end some Fruita threats.

“The guys made some good plays,” Coddington said. “Baseball is tough, but all of the guys are on their toes no matter what, so that’s good.”

A few errant throws, however, also helped the Wildcats advance on base.

Ian Szura singled to center in the third for DHS and the Demons also drew a bunch of walks to get some traffic on the bases. Durango, however, was unable to bring any runner home and was shut out after six innings 11-0.

DHS is now 3-13 overall and 1-2 in the 5A/4A Southwestern League. Fruita leads the league with a record of 11-6, 3-0.

The two teams play again at 11 a.m. Saturday at DHS.

“I’m not disappointed with the effort,” Coddington said. “We had a good week of practice, and we’ll get after it again tomorrow.”
