Golfing for schools

Two tournaments to benefit education efforts

Durangoans have found a good way to indulge in their passions guilt-free, by pursuing them for a good cause.

Golfers seeking to chase that little white ball down the fairways on the Glacier Club’s beautiful courses have two shots at doing it over the next few days.

On Sunday, Mountain Middle School is holding its third annual Links-to-Learning Golf Scramble featuring prizes for best ball, closest to pin and other challenges. Featuring a noon shotgun start, the $150 entry fee covers 18 holes, a golf cart, practice balls, lunch and the afternoon awards reception.

There is still room for four teams of four, and people can sign up as individuals as well as teams. Email Mark Epstein at ptso@mountainmiddleschool.org or call him at 946-6345 to register.

Nongolfers can join the fun at the reception, which includes a silent auction, at 4:30 p.m. for $35.

Mountain Middle School is a free public charter school that provides a project-based curriculum to students in grades six through eight.

Music in the Mountains Goes to School will be the second beneficiary of a tournament at the Glacier Club.

Its second annual 18-hole Golf and BBQ Classic will tee off at 10 a.m. Wednesday. The cost is $150 per person or $600 per team, and both avid golfers and duffers can book through Sunday by emailing Jan Williams at jwilliams@musicinthemountains.com. Nongolfers are also welcome to attend the luncheon at about 2:30 p.m. that day by emailing Williams.

Funds raised will support the numerous music education programs that Goes to School provides to thousands of elementary and secondary school students in the Four Corners each year. Music in the Mountains also provides scholarships and instrument loans to talented students who need assistance to further their training.
