Got squirrel meat?

Conservation association raises funds

Squirrel, antelope, wild-caught tuna, and of course, plenty of elk, were served Saturday at the annual wild game potluck fundraiser for the Vallecito Conservation and Sporting Association. The event included a drawing, pie auction and silent auction to raise funds for the association.

The big prizes on Saturday were a Henry Brass 30/30 shotgun and a Smith and Wesson Shield 40-caliber handgun. The potluck was held at the Lake House.

Association activities include youth fishing and hunting trips, along with lake clean ups around Vallecito, said Joe Schank, the president of the VCSA.

The group's upcoming event is a winter fishing contest from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 21. Registration and weigh-in is at the Vallecito Community Center.

The entry fee is $25, and there are $1,000 prizes for the heaviest pike, trout and stringer. Second place is $500, and third place is fishing equipment.

Kids age 5-12 receive an ice fishing start up kit while supplies last.

Proceeds from the annual potluck and other events pay for the start up kits and other youth activities, Schank said.

The association meets at 7 p.m. the second Tuesday of the month at the Vallecito Community Church. Folks are welcome to sign up to be a member at the Rocky Mountain General Store at 17454 CR 501 or email info@vallecitosportingclub.org for more information. The club's website is www.vallecitosportingclub.org.

Association members who apply for a hunting safety card will get the cost covered by the group. Also, there are members-only fishing events and other activities throughout the year.
