‘Herald Facebook page. What a joke!’

Some years ago, The Durango Herald made a deal with the devil, oops, I meant Facebook to monitor the comments posted by readers on the Herald website.

From my perspective, Facebook monitors are pretty heavy handed, especially when it comes to comments supporting the Second Amendment. As a bonus included in this deal, we get countless offers to make as much as $30,000 a month from home in the comments section.

Since I pay for the print edition as well as the online edition of the Herald, I’ve never checked the Herald Facebook page. What a joke!

One or two stories per day are posted and the comments come with this caveat: Most relevant is selected, so some comments may have been filtered out. How’s that for censorship? I can only assume that the Facebook posts are designed to create clicks that can, in turn, justify online advertising rates.

So the Herald decision makers, consider how much money you can save by dropping Facebook and not buying three-day-old columns from Bloomberg News, The Washington Post and The New York Times.
