Hey, Durango kids: Track Santa’s journey online

The North American Aerospace Defense Command in Colorado Springs has been tracking Santa on his annual worldwide journey for 60 years, and this year Santa’s movements will also be live on The Durango Herald’s website.

All the good little boys and girls having trouble sleeping as they wait for Santa Claus on Christmas Eve can track his movements online.

The North American Aerospace Defense Command in Colorado Springs has been tracking Santa on his annual worldwide journey for 60 years, and this year Santa’s movements will also be live on The Durango Herald’s website.

This tradition started after an advertisement in the Colorado Springs Gazette printed the number for the commander of the Continental Air Defense Command instead of Santa’s direct line. The director of operations, Col. Harry Shoup, had his staff check the radar for Santa’s sleigh coming down from the North Pole.

After NORAD was created, it took on the responsibility.

The agency also keeps secret Santa files online with the likely date of his first flight (343 A.D.) and the maximum speed of his sleigh (faster than starlight) and other fun facts at noradsanta.org.

The Santa tracker will be available Wednesday at www.durangoherald.com/santa.
