BOULDER – A state highway in the foothills west of Boulder is closed indefinitely after blasting work triggered a huge rock slide.

The Boulder Daily Camera reports the rocks tumbled onto Colorado 119 in Boulder Canyon on Wednesday. The highway was expected to remain blocked until at least Thursday while crews remove rubble.

The road was closed at the time of the blast and no injuries were reported.

The Boulder Valley School District said some buses must be rerouted, so they’ll be late in delivering students to schools and returning them home.

The blast was part of a project to move more of the highway onto bedrock to protect from flood damage. State highway officials say the detonation released 8,000 cubic yards of rock, about 20 times more than usual.
