Ignacio 13th in Paonia

3 Bobcats place at Screaming Eagle

Led by junior Skieler Grooms' fourth-place result at 138 pounds, Ignacio managed to total 38 points and place 13th at the always-tough Paonia Screaming Eagle Invitational last Saturday.

Beginning with a pin in 1:21 of 2A Kremmling West Grand's Gabe DeMattos, Grooms finished 3-2 at the meet, losing only to PHS standout Sackett Chesnik in the winners' bracket semifinals, and to Palisade's Cody Head-also by pin-in the third-place bout.

Before losing to Head, Grooms picked up a 4-0 win over Norwood's James Franklin. Norwood ended up being the highest-placing 2A/1A San Juan Basin League team present, piling up 125 points and earning sixth.

Also for Ignacio, Dustin Sanchez came home with fifth-place distinction at 152 pounds, having also posted a 3-2 mark and finishing the tourney with a 7-1 win over 2A Hotchkiss' Jace Peebles-whom he'd defeated 6-0 earlier in the day-following losses to Palisade's Austin Bernal and 3A Olathe's Brent Gray.

Freshman 160-pounder Micah Westbrook went 1-2 at 160 pounds, picking up an injury-default win over Palisade's Sean Sarti. And at 182, sophomore Cesar Pedregon placed sixth after losing by pin, 39 seconds into the second period, against 4A Montrose sophomore Cole Simmons.

He finished the SEI with a 1-3 mark, having pinned Mancos' Cameron Fury right off the bat in just 51 seconds, but then was bumped into the consolation stages when Paonia's Jaden Miller pinned him in 1:00 even.

Up next for the Bobcats will be their Butch Melton Memorial, set to begin at 9 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 27.
