Johnson, Hawkins claim titles in Center

BHS girls 2nd out of 17 teams

Busy as ever for the Bayfield girls' track-and-field team last Friday, junior Amber Johnson won the 200-meter dash, with her 28.97-second sprint bettering the 29.10 of 1A Antonito's Brianna Martinez, as well as teammate Courtney Bayles' fifth-place 29.54. Johnson then ran a leg on the 4x200 and joined Isis Gonzales, Bayles and Bridget Goddard in ruling the day with a 1:53.67 (just under 10 seconds faster than their seeding time.) That helped the Wolverines pile up 90 points when the Center Invitational was concluded. BHS' total trailed only 3A Salida's 109, but bettered 3A Buena Vista's 62 points, 2A Fairplay South Park's 56 and 1A Mosca Sangre de Cristo's 50 in the standings.

Senior Katie Hawkins captured first in the pole vault, with her 8-foot, 6-inch best well ahead of second-place teammate Maddi Foutz's 7'0" and Miranda Talbot's fourth-place 6'6". Goddard took second in the 800-meter run (2:35.60), and Gonzales took third in the 400 (1:05.21).

Freshman Tymbree Florian took second in the long jump, flying 15'11.5", and senior Tori Tate was fifth at 13'11". Florian also finished a strong third in the 100 (13.84s), and Johnson was seventh in the 100m hurdles (19.54). With Florian running a leg, Bayfield's 4x100 relay (also including Caibri Schaefer, Tate and Shaylea Freier) trimmed 1.76 seconds off its seeding time and placed third in 58.13.

The 800m sprint medley of Schaefer, Tate, Hannah Whitmer and Olivia Keitz wasn't too slow either and took fifth in 2:12.99.

Throwers Tiarra Christensen and Mikayla Barnes finished fifth and sixth in the shot put, with Christensen recording a best of 29'4.5" and Barnes 27'9". Christensen finished ninth in the discus at 74'11", while Hawkins took sixth (78'2") and Bayles an impressive fourth (84'1").

Jessica George was eighth in the high jump at 4'2" and Whitmer tied for ninth at 4'0". Tate and Johnson actually tied for ninth in the triple jump with matching 29'8" bests.

2A Del Norte (37 points), 2A Center and 3A La Jara Centauri (28 each), 2A Cripple Creek-Victor (24) and 2A Westcliffe Custer County (23) rounded out the team standings' top ten.

Up next, Bayfield's girls will see action at this afternoon's Montezuma-Cortez Invitational.
