June 19, 4:30-6 p.m.: Great Garden Series: Striking a Balance: Fire Adapted and Livable Landscape Designs. When we think about landscaping our homes in Southwest Colorado, sometimes it can feel like we are forced to choose between wildfire safety and beautification and enjoyment on the other. This does not have to be the case; the two can coexist. During this presentation, two experts from different fields will come together to discuss how to maximize wildfire risk reduction and maintain a beautiful livable landscape around the home.

June 27, 2-3 p.m.: Summer Teen Zone: Build a Mini Gold Course. Get ready to show off your skills. We’re building a mini-golf course together at Teen Time. Will you be the champion of the course we build? Bring your lucky putter or use ours. For Ages 13-17.

June 28, 2-3 p.m.: Adventures in Birding. Birdwatching can be a rewarding and enjoyable activity for kids that sow seeds of wonder for a lifelong love of nature. Perfect for ages 5-12.

Summer learning is here

The Pine River Library has planned an adventure-themed Summer Learning Program for the community this year. The two-month program runs June and July and will feature live animal visits, weekly programs for all ages and an outdoor movie. There will be storytimes for the youngest participants, weekly STEAM programs for kids and weekly tabletop gaming for teens. Animal visits include reptiles, Wolfwood, agility and scent-work dogs, horses, and more. Adult events include a beginning fly fishing class, salve making, an intro to archaeology program, kitten yoga, basic bike maintenance, beginning Spanish and genealogy, and more. And there will be prizes. Participants will get an entry to drawings for every activity they complete, including attending a program, committing an act of kindness, going on an adventure, completing the StoryWalk and reading a book. Babies/toddlers

Storytime Explorers: Thursdays 11 a.m.-noon. Storytime and craft, and then stay after to play and meet other families. All ages welcome. This program will be held in the Library Park, weather permitting.

Kids

Wild Wednesdays: 11 a.m.-noon. Kids, families and caregivers, join us for special STEAM activities each week. NOTE: Open to all but younger children will need assistance with the projects. This is a drop-in event and participants may come and go as they please – no registration required. Interested teens are also welcome.

Safari Fridays, 11 a.m.-noon. Weekly animal visits for all ages. June 7: Scent Work Dogs; June 14: Wolfwood; June 21: Reptiles; June 28: Track and Furs.

Teens

Teen Tabletop Club Tuesdays, 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Weekly tabletop gaming session. Magic, D&D, Cthulhu and more – you choose the adventure.

Weekly Programs
Mountaintop Movement Fitness Classes

These classes are hosted by local fitness instructors Brian and Tammy Williams. Follow them on the Mountaintop Movement Facebook page for more information.

Full Body Fit Class: Monday-Thursday, 8:15-8:50 a.m.: Work out using your own body weight or light hand weights to work all the body parts. The free classes are always similar in style but always different moves to keep it fun and fresh. You’ll need a yoga mat and light hand weights. If you don’t have them, there are extras that can be used. All ages and fitness levels are welcome.

Yoga For All

Tuesdays and Thursdays, 9-10 a.m.: This class lets us move dynamically from one posture to another. We create awareness and harmony between the mind and body that allows us to remove stress and anxiety. We use our breath to move deeper into our body while warming, lengthening and strengthening our muscles. All you need is a yoga mat and a water bottle. Some yoga tools such as blocks, a blanket and a strap are encouraged. These classes are on a donation basis. Taught by Evelyn Van Antwerp M.Ed., E-RYT 500.

Friends of the library shed book sale

Tuesdays, 1-3 p.m.: Stop by the shed in the library parking lot for our weekly popup book sale.

Community Knitting and Crochet Group

Sundays, 2-4 p.m.: All are welcome. Whether you have been knitting and/or crocheting for years or you would like to learn, we are happy to have you and will do our best to help you get started.

Program Calendar

June 1, 8 a.m.-noon: FOL Book and Yard Sale. The Friends of the Pine River have sorted through stacks of books to sell their best picks. In conjunction with Bayfield Yard Sale Day, the Friends will host a book sale that will also include a yard sale event (including craft supplies) in the parking lot of the library. All proceeds from the designated Friends of the Library tables benefit the library. In addition to the Friends of the Library sale, there will also be community members selling their own items.

June 3, 6-8 p.m.: Typeset Writer’s Group. No rules, just writing. Each month a member of the group will bring an article for discussion. Participants also have the option to bring two pages of their own writing to read aloud, but it’s not required. If you’d like to read your own writing, bring it in manuscript format.

June 4, 6-7:30 p.m.: Bike Maintenance 101. This class will cover the very basics of bicycle maintenance and will include a few tips to make sure things run smoothly, including how to fix a flat tire, what to carry with you on a ride, preventive maintenance and other troubleshooting tips. This workshop will have both lecture and hands-on portions and will be guided by participant experience level and interest. Open to all, but geared toward beginners. Wear close-toed shoes and clothes that you are OK with getting a little dirty. Preregistration required: Stop by the library or call 884-2222, ext. 1.

June 5, 10 a.m.: Delayed library opening because of monthly staff meeting.

June 5, 12, 19 and 26, 6-7:30 p.m.: Very Basic Spanish. These sessions will feature the very basics: alphabet, letter sounds, simple vocabulary and simple phrases. Preregistration required: Stop by the library or call 884-2222, ext. 1.

June 6, 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m.: Learn Over Lunch: Bird Watching. Join us the first Thursday of each month to enjoy a free lunch and a presentation from a local expert. RSVP by calling the library at 884-2222, ext. 1, or the Senior Center at 884-5415. You can also RSVP by stopping by both the library or Senior Center. RSVP by the Monday before each presentation. The June 6 Learn Over Lunch topic will be: “Birdwatching: A window into the world around you.” Birds have a special connection with their environment. Melissa May from Mountain Studies Institute will talk about how identifying birds can give you clues about the changing seasons and the local habitats.

June 10, 6-7 p.m.: Salve Making. Learn how to make salves in this free hands-on class sponsored by the Pine River Garden Club. Participants will make a Calendula Salve (Calendula Officinalis) for the treatment and healing of cuts, scrapes, rashes, burns and other “broken skin” type injuries, and an Arnica Salve (Heterotheca Inuloides) for the treatment of bruising and sore muscles. Preregistration required: Stop by the library or call 884-2222, ext. 1.

June 11, 10-11 a.m.: Card Making at the Pine River Senior Center. Create two beautiful handmade cards. Free.

June 12, 2-3:30 p.m.: BookMarks Book Club. Open to all adults in the Pine River Valley. The library provides the books, the discussion leader and a place to meet each month. Stop by the front desk today to check out your copy of this month’s title: “Lady Tan’s Circle of Women,” by Lisa See.

June 13, 3-5 p.m.: Community Music Makers. Local musicians of all abilities and instruments (including voice) are welcome. We share our songs and love of music of all kinds. Bring your instrument and a few copies of what you want to play and share. We usually go around the circle and each person shares a song with others joining in. Do not be intimidated; we truly are of all ability levels.

June 14 and 28, 4-5:30 p.m.: Mahjong Meetup. Mahjong is a tile-based table-top game developed in 19th century China. Similar to the Western card game rummy, mahjong is a game of skill, strategy and luck. It is entertaining to play and, like dominoes, is relatively easy to learn. All are welcome, join us twice monthly to play.

June 15, noon-1 p.m.: Kitten Yoga. Bayfield Yoga Instructor Colleen Theobald will host a special yoga class with the La Plata County Humane Society kittens. Participants need to be at least 10 years old and those under 15 need to be accompanied by an adult. Let go of stress and anxiety by joining a playful yoga class while interacting and socializing with some adorable furry feline friends. This class is beginner friendly- because let’s face it, it’s really about the kittens. Suggested donation is $10-$20 per person and all proceeds will benefit the Humane Society. Bring a mat or blanket to practice on and a water bottle. Preregistraton required: Stop by the library or call 884-2222, ext. 1.

June 18, 1-2:30 p.m.: Death Café. A time and place where people come to share food, drink tea or coffee, and discuss death openly and honestly. The aim is to increase awareness about death in order to help people make the most of their (finite) lives.

June 19, noon-1 p.m.: Cookbook Club. Each month we gather together and share a potluck of recipes from a chosen cookbook, chef or cuisine. Stop by the library and pick up a copy of that month’s cookbook and then call or email Darcy to RSVP and let the library know what recipe you’ll be making for the potluck (884-2222, ext. 522, darcy@prlibrary.org). In June, we’ll cook recipes from the featured continent of Asia.

June 19, 6:15 p.m.: Library Board Meeting. Regular monthly meeting of the library’s Board of Trustees.

June 24, 10-11:30 a.m.: Fly Fishing 101. Durango’s San Juan Angler fly fishing shop is hosting a free Fly Fishing 101 class. Learn the basics of setting up a fly rod and beginner casting skills. We’ll also talk a little about entomology. San Juan Angler’s talented guides will provide all the gear, equipment and tackle needed for the class. If you have your own rod and would like to practice with it, bring it along. Preregistration required: Stop by the library or call 884-2222, ext. 1.

June 27, 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.: Spanish Conversation Hour. Practice your Spanish in an informal setting. All ages and language levels welcome.

June 28, 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.: Pine River Senior Center Outreach. Books and DVDs available for check out, delivered to the Senior Center with an extended loan period (four weeks, rather than the standard one to three weeks) each month.

Check Out State Parks Program – Fort Lewis and Sunnyside Libraries have “Check Out State Parks” backpacks available for check out. Each pack includes a pass for free entry to Colorado state parks, binoculars, wildlife viewing guides and park information. The pack can be checked out on an adult library card for one week.
