Letter: Republicans aren’t standing up for what we stand for

It sure feels like we are living “through the looking glass” these days. The Republican Party used to stand for God and country, for the Constitution and lawfulness, for traditional morals and ethics. They served a healthy preserving function in politics, balancing the innovative function of Democratic progressives.

But right now more than 100 GOP Congressmen are breaking their oath, “to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies foreign and domestic.” They are using lies, fantasy conspiracies, no evidence and force of will to overturn a national election. They have broken our Constitutional covenant and sided with an authoritarian psychopath who does not like the election results. They aim to destroy democracy and the foundation of our great country. There are a few Republicans standing against this corruption.

Now is the time for all good women and men to stand up and speak out for truth – in the face of baseless conspiracies, in the face of mob-cult behavior, in the face of blatant corruption and mendacity and for the beauty of our Constitution and country – for that which is good in our shared values. This is when our country can shine forth with what makes it great, or decline into ignorance, fear, prejudice and partisan suppression. I love what we stand for in the USA. Now it is time to actually stand up for what we stand for.
