Water authority to host public meetings

The La Plata West Water Authority has scheduled two public meetings that will take place at 6:30 p.m. Thursday and Sept. 23 at the Fort Lewis Mesa Elementary School Gym, 11274 Colorado Highway 140, Hesperus.

The authority will present updated information about progress on the rural domestic water system being planned for Western La Plata County along with an update on progress of the construction of a pipeline from Ridges Basin Reservoir to Lake Durango. All Western La Plata County residents and property owners are encouraged to attend.

Prescribed burn planned near Pagosa Springs

The Southern Ute Agency Fire Management Department is planning to conduct a prescribed burn project on Tuesday, approximately 16 miles southwest of Pagosa Springs.

The burn project is dependent on weather and burning conditions; therefore, a window has been established from Monday to Sept. 30. The burn project is located on the Southern Ute Indian Reservation and covers 110 acres. The approximate center of the burn is located at: 37° 07’ 15” x 107° 16’ 30” and covers, all or portions, of Sections 9 and 10 in T-33N, R-3W. The purpose of the burn is to reduce hazardous fuels and improve wildlife habitat. Smoke may be visible from the Chimney Rock, Pagosa Springs and surrounding areas.

Motorcycle and car show to be held

A Motorcycle and Car Show will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Durango Harley-Davidson, 750 S. Camino del Rio.

Bayfield water dock station open

The water dock station in the town of Bayfield is now available for bulk water.

There was a short in the electrical line distributing power to the water dock station. The short was located under an irrigation ditch, which required additional time to repair. The electrical short was not an issue with services from La Plata Electric Association as was erroneously posted on the water dock station.

Daybreak Rotary Club to meet Wednesday

Colleen Johnson, executive director for the local Red Cross chapter, will explain how the organization is all about preparedness, response and recovery to Durango Daybreak Rotarians at their regular meeting at 7 a.m. Wednesday at the Durango Community Recreation Center, 2700 Main Ave.

Johnson’s chapter aims to train 1,000 individuals in preparedness through its Be Red Cross Ready and Ready Rating programs.

Documentary to be shown Thursday, Friday

The Four Corners Office for Resource Efficiency will host two screenings of the “Switch Energy Project,” a documentary aimed at providing a glimpse of future energy use and sources, at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at the Smiley Building Theater, 1309 East Third Ave., and at 6:30 p.m. Friday in Noble Hall Room 130 at Fort Lewis College.

Volunteers sought for Animas River cleanup

Volunteers are needed for the annual Animas River Clean-Up from 9:30 a.m. to noon Saturday at Santa Rita Park.

Trout Unlimited/Five Rivers Chapter will host the annual cleanup. Volunteers are needed to pick up trash along the river. Garbage bags will be provided, and volunteers will be assigned specific areas to collect trash.
