Ignacio library offers computer classes

Ignacio Community Library, 470 Goddard Ave., will offer these computer classes:

Internet Basics will take place at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday. Participants will learn the basics of Google Chrome, Firefox and Internet Explorer. Learn valuable skills in browsing smartly, maintaining security and networking socially while online.

Windows 10 Overview will take place at 2 p.m. Oct. 27. Participants will learn the new features of Windows 10 and how it is fundamentally different from Windows 7 and Windows 8.

Bayfield Elementary to discuss nutrition

Bayfield Elementary School will host a free parent education night, “Nutrition Basics for Children’s Health & Forming Healthy Habits,” from 5:30 to 7:45 p.m. Tuesday in the Bayfield Elementary gymnasium.

Guest speakers will include Dr. Nicola St. Mary and health coach Hana Renee. The two-part talk will include “Nutrition Matters! Here’s Why ... .” The talk will discuss how nutrition affects health, junk food, food sensitivity and nutrient deficiencies.

The second part, called “Translating Knowledge into Action,” will discuss how to break old habits and form new ones.

Information from local food resources and cooking classes will be available from Pine River Shares, The Bayfield Family Center and Bountiful Baskets.

Child care and refreshments will be provided. Child care drop-off, refreshments and booth-viewing will start at 5:30 p.m. The talk will begin at 6 p.m.

County’s proposed budget on the agenda

The La Plata County Commissioners will hold a public meeting on the La Plata County 2016 Proposed Budget at 6 p.m. Wednesday in the boardroom at the County Administration Building, 1101 East Second Ave.

At this meeting, staff will provide a presentation regarding the proposed budget. After the presentation, the public will have the opportunity to provide input.

The budget is available for view at http://co.laplata.co.us/publications/2012/10/budgets, or in person at the County Administration Building and the Clerk’s Office, 98 Everett St., Suite C. Citizens unable to attend can email suggestions, comments or concerns to bocc@co.laplata.co.us.

Scribblers to discuss tips for query letters

Writers and Scribblers will meet from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Commons Buildings, 701 Camino del Rio.

“Query Letters: Pitfalls and Tips” will be presented by Melissa Stacy. Guests are welcome.

Mancos library to screen documentary

Mancos Public Library, 211 E. First St. in Mancos, will present a free screening of the documentary film, “Stray Dog,” at 6 p.m. Thursday.

This is the first film as part of the new documentary film series Indie Lens Pop-Up. From the director of the Oscar-nominated “Winter’s Bone” comes this portrait of a motorcycle-riding Vietnam veteran. A community discussion will follow the screening.

Rotary to talk about budget, mill levy

The Durango High Noon Rotary Club will meet from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday at the DoubleTree Hotel, 501 Camino del Rio.

The cost for lunch is $15. La Plata Commissioner Julie Westendorf will speak on the upcoming budget and mill levy issues.

Class for homebuyers begins on Thursday

The Regional Housing Alliance of La Plata County offers a free monthly Homebuyer Education Class.

The Homebuyer Education Class is an 8-hour program designed to help participants purchase and own a home. Topics will include: Buyer readiness; budget/financial management; credit reports and scoring; mortgage lending; working with a real estate agent; homeowners insurance; home inspections; the closing process; home maintenance; and foreclosure prevention. The class is facilitated by the RHA with contributions from local professionals such as loan officers, real estate agents and insurance agents who teach participants about their specific field of expertise.
