McElmo Creek Flume to be discussed

A “Saturday Seminar” will take place at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Animas Museum, 3065 West Second Ave.

Linda Towle will present “Saving the McElmo Creek Flume: Water History of the Montezuma Valley.” The flume was listed on the Colorado List of Endangered Places in 2011 and on the National Register of Historic Places in 2012. It’s the last surviving one of 104 flumes that were part of the original Montezuma Valley Irrigation system built in the 1890s, to deliver water to the Montezuma Valley. With a background in archaeology, Towle is chairman of the Cortez Historic Preservation Board.

La Plata County budget to be discussed July 23

La Plata County staff will hold a public meeting on the La Plata County 2015 budget at 5:30 p.m. July 23 in the meeting room in the La Plata County Courthouse, 1060 East Second Ave.

At this meeting, staff will give a presentation regarding the current financial position of the county and the direction the county is heading in creating a budget for 2015 that supports the needs of the community. After the presentation, the public will have the opportunity to provide input in the development of the 2015 budget. All input will be considered as staff develops the 2015 La Plata County budget.

Durango library to hold summertime book sale

The Friends of the Durango Public Library summertime book sale will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the library, 1900 East Third Ave.

All books, and all categories will be on sale for $1.50 a pound.

Cattlemen to host chuck wagon cook-off

The Chuck Wagon Cook-Off sponsored by the La Plata-Archuleta Cattlemen’s Association will be held on July 26.

The event will take place, under the trees, just south of the La Plata County Fairgrounds, 2500 Main Ave. Six wagons will be competing, and tickets are available at Basin Co-op in Durango and Valley Feed in Gem Village.

Mercy to host blood drives

Mercy Regional Medical Center will host these blood drives:

4 to 7 p.m. July 31 in Conference Rooms A and B.

10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 1 in the Bloodmobile.

People who donate through July 31 will be entered for a chance to win a LiveXtend certified convertible PT Cruiser from ReCARnation.
