Free pit-bull spay, neuter available
D-SNiP and the La Plata County Humane Society are partnering to offer free spay and neuter surgeries for pit bull and pit-bull mixes.
Each surgery covers the cost of a spay or a neuter and a rabies vaccination for healthy pit bulls and pit-bull mixtures, 4 months old to 5 years old.

Cowboy parade seeks entries
The Oct. 4 Durango Cowboy Poetry Gathering Parade is seeking entries.
This year’s theme is “Honoring the Ranch Woman” and the Grand Marshall will be Francis Hotter. Live music and a gunfight at the Strater Hotel will start the festivities. There is no entry fee. Advance registration is available at http://durangocowboypoetrygathering.org.
High Noon Rotary to meet Thursday
The Durango High Noon Rotary Club will meet from 11:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday at the DoubleTree Hotel, 501 Camino del Rio.
The cost for lunch is $15. The group will hear from Cliff Spencer, the superintendent at Mesa Verde National Park. There also will be an introduction by Sarada Leavenworth.
PBS series to be screened
The Center of Southwest Studies at Fort Lewis College will host a screening of “Time Team America, Episode: Lost Pueblo Village” at 6:15 p.m. Thursday in the center’s lyceum classroom.
“Time Team America” is a prime-time television series on PBS. Time Team came to Colorado for the Dillard site to explore a defining moment in Pueblo Indian culture: the transition from hunting and gathering to an agricultural way of life. The “Lost Pueblo Village” episode focuses on this time in ancestral Puebloan history in Southwest Colorado. Using the latest technology, Time Team’s crew joins forces with Crow Canyon Archaeological Center’s staff to help unearth an ancient village at the Dillard site. Parking at FLC is free after 5 p.m.
