Volunteers needed to prepare tax returns

The local Volunteer Income Tax Assistance group is in need of volunteers to prepare tax returns at no charge for low- to moderate-income taxpayers.

Training and software are provided. Returns are prepared February through April 15 for seniors on Mondays and all taxpayers on Saturdays. Volunteers who do not prepare returns also are needed for site support positions.

Republican women to meet Tuesday

Southwest Republican Women will honor local veterans and veterans service groups at their meeting at noon Tuesday at the DoubleTree Hotel, 501 Camino del Rio.

Lunch is $16 for all attendees. Everyone is welcome to this nonpartisan gathering and encouraged to invite a veteran.

Black Mesa benefit to be held Saturday

The Black Mesa Benefit Festival will take place from 3 to 10 p.m. Saturday at 2599 County Road 225.

This is an outdoor benefit show for Navajo families resisting relocation and the destruction of their ancestral land by Peabody Coal. Eight bands from throughout the Southwest will play and all money raised will go to direct, on-land support. There is a $5 suggested donation.

Holiday Craft Fair to be held Saturday

TARA’s Community Center, which serves Tiffany, Allison, Rosa and Arboles, will host a Holiday Craft Fair from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at 333 Milton Lane, Arboles.

Crafters and artists will sell handcrafted jewelry, crochet wearable fiber art, handmade knives, oil and watercolor paintings, handmade furniture, handmade soaps and lotions, birdhouses, homemade candy, toys, holiday cards and more. Angelica Marquez-Lucero will provide breakfast and lunch for sale.

Medicare supplement class available

A free Medicare supplement class will take place from noon to 1 p.m. Monday at the Durango Pine River Valley Bank, 1701 Main Ave.

People who are turning 65, children of seniors, seniors who have been told their former carrier is no longer going to insure them or Medicare-disabled people are all invited to attend. Participants are asked to bring their questions.

Salvation Army seeking bell ringers

The Salvation Army of La Plata County is seeking bell ringers for the 2014 campaign.

Two-hour slots are available at various locations in Durango and Bayfield.

Water plans to be discussed

The Southwest Basin Roundtable will host these informational meetings from 6 to 8 p.m. for people to learn more about the content of the Colorado Water Plan and the Southwest Basin Implementation Plan and to share their water-related input with local roundtable representatives. The meetings will be:

Nov. 17 at the Ross Aragon Community Center, 451 Hot Springs Blvd., Pagosa Springs.

Nov. 19 at the Pine River Senior Center, 111 West South St., Bayfield.

Dec. 1 at the Mancos Community Center, 117 N. Main St., Mancos.
