Four Corners Back Country Horsemen to meet Sept. 11

The Four Corners Back Country Horsemen will meet at 7 p.m. Sept. 11 at the La Plata County Fairgrounds, 2500 Main Ave.

Guests are welcome. The educational program will be a presentation by Colorado Parks & Wildlife on hunting safety.

Snowdown Durango to host kickoff party at museum

Snowdown Durango will host the 2015 Steampunk Snowdown Kickoff Party from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Sept. 12 at the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Grange, located through the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad Museum.

This get-together will begin the planning, organizing and celebrating of Steampunk Snowdown and will feature food by Lost Dog Bar & Lounge, a cash bar, costumes, ornate décor and retro-futuristic inventions as envisioned from the 19th century.

The unveiling of the 2015 Steampunk Snowdown poster art also will take place. Steampunk Snowdown will take place from Jan. 28 to Feb. 1.

Volunteers needed for public-lands project

San Juan Mountains Association in partnership with Bureau of Land Management and Canyons of the Ancients National Monument will host a National Public Lands Day project from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 13 in the Goodman Point Area of Canyons of the Ancients.

National Public Lands Day is a national event, and volunteer projects are designed to provide education and stewardship opportunities for participants. Volunteers must register and need to dress for safety wearing long pants, sturdy shoes, gloves, and bring their own water and snacks. Lunch will be provided.

Alternative Horizons seeking volunteers

Alternative Horizons a local nonprofit is looking for volunteers to help end violence in the community.

A free, comprehensive advocate training session will be offered by the group beginning Oct. 21.
