Herbicide Carryover Working Group to meet

The Herbicide Carryover Working Group will host a follow-up meeting from noon to 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Animas Room of the La Plata County Fairgrounds, 2500 Main Ave.

The public is welcome. The purpose of the informal working group is to address the issue of herbicide carryover and develop an educational program for entities that distribute manure as a soil amendment, herbicide applicators and area food producers.

Herbicides with the active ingredient of aminopyralid, clopyralid or picloram can be effective in controlling weeds, but the residues can contaminate hays and grasses and the manure of any livestock that consumes the hay or grass.

Gardeners and farmers across La Plata County that have used manure contaminated with these herbicides for soil enhancement have had affected, and even lost crops.

For more information, call Gwen Lachelt at 382-6215 or email gwen.lachelt@co.laplata.co.us.
