Puppy Play Party, Dog Happy Hour to be held

A Puppy Play Party and Dog Happy Hour will take place from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the play yard at the La Plata County Humane Society, 1111 South Camino del Rio.

The event allows dogs and puppies to run leash free in an enclosed play yard. Participants should bring shot records for the puppy or dog. Dog-behavior specialists will be on-hand to help interpret and redirect behavior while the dog learns to socialize and run. Shade and water will be available.

Parenting workshop to be held Thursday

“Dealing with Disrespect,” a free workshop by Parent/Youth Coach Liza Tregillus, will take place at noon Thursday at Bowman Hall, 419 San Juan Drive, next to the Unitarian Fellowship.

Intersection-completion event to be held

The Colorado Department of Transportation and contractor Interstate Highway Construction Inc. will mark the completion of work on the new intersection/highway safety improvement project on U.S. Highway 160/550 at 9:30 a.m. Friday in the grassy area at the DoubleTree Hotel, 501 Camino del Rio.

Representatives from the city of Durango, the Federal Highway Administration and State Transportation Commission will be on hand. After the speeches, participants will get a walking project tour, an overview of the new features and have an opportunity to ask questions of the project team.

The goal of this project is to increase safety and mobility at the intersection. In addition to constructing the Continuous Flow Intersection, the project has also addressed safety and mobility on U.S. 160 west and on U.S. 160/550 north to 9th Street, including many multi-modal features installed in coordination with the city of Durango.

Democratic Party to host celebration

A free open house to celebrate the grand opening of the Democratic Party’s headquarters will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Sunday on Alpine Bank’s rooftop, 1099 Main Ave.

The headquarters will be in Suite 100 of the Alpine Bank building. Special guest Secretary of State Candidate Joe Neguse, and local candidates will speak. Light brunch snacks will be served. To get to the roof from the main lobby, take the elevator to the top floor.

Fort Lewis continues summer lecture series

The Center of Southwest Studies at Fort Lewis College will wrap-up its summer lecture series at 1:30 p.m. Aug. 20 in the Center of Southwest Studies lyceum classroom.

The series will feature a talk from Syl Allred on “Tassel-Eared Squirrels and Ponderosa Pines: A Relationship of Necessity.” This event is free and open to the public. Parking is free. Tassel-eared squirrels live only in the ponderosa pine forests of the southwestern United States.

The U.S. Forest Service has designated tassel-eared squirrels as management indicator species, meaning that within ponderosa pine forests of the Southwest the presence of tassel eared squirrels is an indicator of forest health.
