La Plata County Fair seeks theme ideas

The La Plata County Fair Board is accepting theme ideas for the 2014 La Plata County Fair.

Themes should reflect the family and community nature of the fair. The theme or slogan should be kept to 10 words or less. Artwork is encouraged and can be dropped off with theme concept submissions at the La Plata County Extension Office at the La Plata County Fairgrounds or mailed to: La Plata County Fairgrounds, 2500 Main Ave., Durango 81301. Submissions should be labeled with name and telephone number.

Entries must be received by 5 p.m. Feb. 27. The winner of the chosen entry will receive a $100 cash prize.

Breast-feeding workshop to take place

“Breast-feeding,” a workshop for mothers and fathers to be, will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Kid’s Rock, 563 Main Ave.

The workshop will be lead by Joy Frazer, an International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners-certified lactation consultant. A breast-feeding manual and snacks will be provided.

Participants will discuss: why breast is best, proper latch and positioning, how to know the baby is getting enough, how to prevent and manage sore and damaged nipples, expectations on day one through two weeks, how to get support and when to ask for professional help.

Fort Lewis job fair will be Wednesday

Community members are invited to the free annual Fort Lewis College Job Fair from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday in the Student Union Ballroom.

This event is designed to help connect employers and job seekers with positions of all types, from full-time and part-time positions to seasonal jobs and internships.

Forty local, regional and national employers will be on hand, so attendees should come prepared to interview. Professional dress is encouraged.

In addition to job-hunting, other career-oriented services will be available, such as résumé reviews and mock interviews.

History of high-country vacations discussed

“Car-Convenience Wilderness: How Highways Made the High Country Vacationland” will be presented by William Philpott at 6 p.m. Thursday at Center of Southwest Studies Lyceum, Room 120, Fort Lewis College.

Durango bird walk to be held Saturday

A bird walk will be hosted by the Durango Bird Club at 9 a.m. Saturday at For the Birds, 1560 East Second Ave.

The walks last about one hour and 15 minutes. Bring binoculars. The walks are free, but donations to the hosting group are welcome.

4CORE to host session on indoor pollution

Four Corners Office for Resource Efficiency, or 4CORE, will host a free educational session to increase awareness of residential indoor air pollution by learning low- or no-cost methods for improving the air quality and reducing health hazards in the home from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Feb. 6 at First National Bank of Durango, in the downstairs training room, 259 W. Ninth St.

Light snacks will be provided. Participants will receive free radon test kits and carbon monoxide alarms.
