Renowned artist to visit Fort Lewis

Internationally renowned artist Volkan Alkanoglu will visit Fort Lewis College on Monday.

An anonymous donor is in discussions with Alkanoglu about installing his art on the southeastern wall of the Community Concert Hall at FLC. While he is on campus, Alkanoglu will meet for lunch with President Dene Thomas and members of the FLC Art Committee at 10:30 a.m. Immediately after, he will sit down with FLC art students at 11:30 a.m. in the Center of Southwest Studies Lyceum. Alkanoglu’s day at FLC will conclude with a meeting with staff at 3:30 p.m. at the Community Concert Hall at FLC. The proposed art project is called, “Reflection.”

East 12th Street construction begins

Atmos Energy will replace a gas main on 14th Street, between Main Avenue and East Third Avenue, beginning Monday.

The project duration is expected to continue for two to four weeks. Parking on this street will be restricted and lane closures should be expected for the duration of the project. Drivers are encouraged to use alternate routes in these areas when possible because of lane restrictions and construction equipment in the roadway. All work is subject to change.

Winter Sports gala will be held Nov. 14

Alpenglow, Durango Winter Sports Foundation’s annual fundraising gala, will take place Nov. 14 at Purgatory Resort.

The “Casino Royale” themed party will feature dining, dancing, gaming, silent and live auction. Money raised will be used to maintain quality winter athletic programs for the youth of Southwest Colorado. Walter Jackson will be inducted into the Durango Winter Sports Foundation Hall of Fame at the event. Doors open at 6 p.m. Participants have the option of dressing in James Bond attire.

To purchase tickets, visit www.durangowintersports.org. The cost is $62.50 per person if purchased by Thursday or $75 per person purchased after Friday. The cost includes dinner, dancing and $5 of gaming chips. Donations also will be accepted on the website.

University women to host fall luncheon

The Durango branch of the American Association of University Women Fall Luncheon will take place at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at DoubleTree Hotel, 501 Camino del Rio.

The guest speaker will be Janet Ross, founder and executive director of the Four Corners School of Outdoor Education in Monticello, Utah. The title of her talk will be, “Putting Learning in its ‘Place,’ A Family Affair.” Special guests will be Fort Lewis College students Nicole Lovato and Dana Mastrangelo, who recently attended the National Conference of College Women Student Leaders at the University of Maryland. Proceeds of the lunch will benefit scholarships toward attendance of FLC students at next year’s NCCWSL conference, as well as other AAUW scholarships. Tickets are $45, $15 tax-deductible, and $20 for students.

Durango Garden Club to meet Wednesday

The Garden Club of Durango will meet at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the home of Betty Kibby, 4019 County Road 301.

Mike Smedley, local bulb expert, will discuss all aspects of growing bulbs and introduce some varieties people should be growing but aren’t. There will be a bulb exchange after the program.
