Bullion King Road temporarily closed

The top portion of the Bullion King Road (Forest Road No. 822), which provides access to Porphyry Basin and Bullion King Lake on the San Juan National Forest in San Juan County, will be temporarily closed to motor vehicles through Sept. 30.

The closure is necessary because of mine reclamation that includes construction of a mine-waste repository under the direction of the Colorado Department of Natural Resources and Division of Reclamation Mining and Safety. The closure is necessary for safety considerations, as heavy equipment will be used to move mine waste and other materials and to haul materials in the area of the narrow upper portion of the four-wheel-drive road.

Visitors will still be able to park at or below mile point 1.7, where the road narrows, as long as their vehicles are parked outside of the travel way. The public will be able to walk the upper portion of the road to access areas outside of the construction zone. Visitors should be ready to yield to all construction vehicles and equipment.
