North Main Avenue lane closure begins

City of Durango Utilities will close the inside-southbound lane and turn lane of U.S. Highway 550 at 1415 North Main Ave. on Monday to allow repair crews access to a water-main leak.

The lane closures is expected to remain for several days as crews excavate, repair and replace the roadway. Businesses and customers in the area should expect delays and rerouted traffic for the duration of the project. The anticipated project completion date is Aug. 3.

Myths of the West in film discussed

The Center of Southwest Studies will continue its 2015 summer lecture series, “Imagining the West,” with Michele Malach’s talk, “The Fall Will Probably Kill You: The Myths of the West in Film,” at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in the center’s Lyceum Room, No. 120.

Malach is an associate professor of journalism and multimedia studies at Fort Lewis College. She also is a founder and organizer of the Durango Independent Film Festival. Malach’s presentation will focus on a few particular myths of the West, and how American cinema has contributed to the creation and perpetuation – and sometimes, the deconstruction – of those myths.

Ranger to present talk on grave protection

Park Ranger Lara Lloyd will present a talk about the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act and how it affects Mesa Verde at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Far View Lodge in Mesa Verde National Park.

The passage of the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act served as a catalyst for a change in relations between the Native American nations, archaeologists, museums and federal agencies. Mesa Verde National Park illustrates those changes on a world stage in which visitors experience the results of more than two decades of consultation.

Domestic violence panel to be held

A panel discussion on domestic violence will take place from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the La Plata County Fairgrounds, 2500 Main Ave.

Participants will hear from an expert panel on the successes and challenges in addressing domestic violence in the Four Corners – with a chance to ask questions of those in the field. The event is free, with coffee and snacks provided. No RSVP is necessary.
