Durango announces weed spraying

The city of Durango will be completing weed spraying through Aug. 23 at these locations:

City-road right of ways in SkyRidge subdivision.

Open space between Hillcrest Drive and SkyRidge subdivision.

City lot between Delwood Circle and San Juan Drive.

The Horse Gulch Trail System.

City property in Three Springs.

The Animas River Trail System.

The areas will be sprayed weather permitting. The city has contracted with Tres Mesa for noxious weed abatement. The herbicides that will be used are called 2-4-D, Amine, Perspective and Confront.

Electra Lake updates invasive-species policy

Electra Lake has updated its invasive-species inspection policy.

The lake now has four staff members certified by the Colorado Parks and Wildlife, and staff members are now able to provide boat inspections and entry all week. All watercraft need to be cleaned, drained, and dry. Boats on trailers need to be sealed with a Colorado Parks and Wildlife inspection band before they are allowed in. Boats on trailers now need to be banded from an inspection station that is located at an invasive-free lake, such as Electra Lake, McPhee, or Vallecito. Boats inspected and banded from Navajo Lake will not be accepted.

County Fairgrounds unavailable to public

The La Plata County Fairgrounds facilities are being used as the command center for the coordinated response to the release of contaminated runoff from the Gold King Mine into the Animas River. The Exhibit Hall and Extension Building are unavailable for public meeting use. No bookings will be made at the fairgrounds until further notice. Fairgrounds staff will contact organizers of scheduled events that may be impacted.

Beekeeping examined by Animas Grange

Beekeeping will be the next topic in a free series of talks at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Animas Valley Grange Hall, 7271 County Road 203.

This topic will be presented by Paula Nelson of the Southern Colorado Beekeepers Association. Nelson has raised bees for four years and is the past president of the Four Corners Beekeeping Association. She assists others in managing their beehives. The talk will be about bees, hives and their causes of death, including pests and pesticides. She will show beekeeping apparel and equipment, and bring empty hive parts.

The grange is sponsoring a series of informative talks by various local experts. Talks will occur once a month. Refreshments will be provided.

Time bank to offer information session

Hour Exchange La Plata, the local time bank, invites the public to a free introductory talk and software orientation from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, located at East Third Avenue and Ninth Street.

People considering joining the time bank should bring a laptop (preferable) or mobile device for the orientation.
