Westendorff to hold office hours for public

La Plata County Commissioner Julie Westendorff will hold office hours for the general public to meet with her from 10 a.m. to noon June 4 at the Pine River Library Conference Room, 395 Bayfield Center Drive in Bayfield.

Westendorff will meet with Bayfield-area residents to learn about their interests and concerns.

Library to begin reading program

Pine River Library Children’s Services manager Elizabeth Von Tauffkirchen will recreate the “Ping-Pong-Plosion” experiment at the library’s Summer Reading Program Kickoff event at 10 a.m. Monday at the library, 395 Bayfield Center Drive in Bayfield.

The experiment uses liquid nitrogen, warm water and hundreds of ping-pong balls.

The library has a video of the “Ping-Pong-Plosion” at www.prlibrary.org.

This year, the library is encouraging kids, teens and adults to read through the summer months. Prizes are awarded throughout the summer, with a grand prize drawing held at the end of July.

For children and teens, the grand prizes range from a pool party to a 3-D pen. Meanwhile, for adults, the grand prize is an Apple Watch.

Build days added to Medicine Trail work

Trails 2000 announces additional Build Days on the new, progressive-style trail maintenance project on Medicine Trail from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Tuesday June, 2, Thursday june 4 and from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. June 6.

The project is designed to improve and enhance the Progressive Ridge riding area in Horse Gulch.

Work will include updating existing features and adding several new elements to improve the flow, sustainability and overall fun factor. To access Build Days, park or ride to Horse Gulch Trailhead at Eighth Avenue and Third Street.

Autism discoveries to be discussed Thursday

Former Durango resident and author Sandra Alexander will host a community gathering on various new and innovative interventions and discoveries related to autism from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at Inhabit in the Sunroom, 1970 East Third Ave.

Alexander will share a short presentation on her book Children of the Cosmos and will introduce the Autism: A Spiritual Approach to Intervention project.

Attendees will have an opportunity to share views, concerns and new discoveries on this subject.

Parents and providers are encouraged to attend.

Bicycle ride for women will be Sunday

Mountain Bike Specialists, 949 Main Ave., will host a Women’s Ride Day at 10 a.m. Sunday.

On Sunday women across the nation are gathering to enjoy a ride together to celebrate women in cycling.

Whether people are accomplished riders or first-timers, Women’s Ride Day will help them connect with other women in the area who enjoy riding.

There will be rides for beginners to advance for both road and mountain-bike riders.

Snacks will be provided after the ride.
