Branch library offers reading programs

Fort Lewis Mesa Branch Library, 11274 Colorado Highway 140 in Hesperus, will host a summer reading program from June 11 to July 30 for kids 12 and younger.

Parents may sign children up beginning at 2 p.m. Tuesday. The program will run nine weeks, with special events for kids at 3 p.m. every Wednesday. Fort Lewis Mesa Library is a branch of Durango Public Library, with hours from 2 to 7 p.m. Monday to Thursday.

Trails 2000 announces volunteer opportunities

Trails 2000 will host trail work at these locations:

From 4 to 6 p.m. Tuesday on Hogsbottom Trail, park at the end of Tech Center Drive and walk towards the landfill. A Trails 2000 truck will be parked near the trail. Sign-in at the work truck for details and directions.

From 5 to 6 p.m. Wednesday on Talon Drive by Fort Lewis College, meet at the road behind the dorms.

Trails 2000 will provide tools, instruction, food and water. Volunteers should wear long pants, a long-sleeved shirt, closed-toe shoes, sun hat, sunscreen and bring a water bottle.

Fellowship group to study pacifism

The Peace and Justice Fellowship will take place from 6 to 7:30 p.m. the first and third Mondays of each month at 111 Linda Court.

The group will study Biblical Pacifism by Dale Brown. Light refreshments and child care will be provided.

Writers and Scribblers to meet June 11

Writers and Scribblers will meet from 3:30 to 5 p.m. June 11 at Pine River Valley Bank, 1701 Main Ave., in Durango.

“Great Tips for Writing a Memoir” will be presented by Tim Cosgrove. Guests are welcome.

City trees to receive root injections

The city of Durango Parks and Recreation will perform root zone ground injections for about 150 American Elm Trees in the public right of way and city parks and the community.

A contract company will do the injections. It will target the insect European elm scale and leaf roller aphids. The applications will begin immediately and last through spring.

City road work continues in Hillcrest

The city of Durango, in working with Four Corners Materials, is reconstructing a number of streets in the Skyridge and Hillcrest neighborhoods.

The paving project in the Skyridge subdivision was to be completed May 30, and the reconstruction work in Hillcrest Estates is expected to be complete June 13. The Streets Department is contracting with All Concrete Solutions to construct 89 Americans with Disabilities Act ramps. The construction project began on May 19. The ramp construction in the West Third Avenue area is now projected for completion on Wednesday, with the ramp construction project beginning in the Crestview area the same day and will run approximately three weeks. Residents in these neighborhoods should expect parking restrictions and traffic delays during the day.

All parking restrictions will be posted a minimum of 24 hours in advance.
